September 24, 200818 yr Obama brought up a good point. He basically said that as president, you are going to constantly be dealing with multiple problems, not just dropping everything and focusing on one thing.

September 24, 200818 yr I definitely think it will backfire on McCain if he delays the debate. I even thought Obama made a good point when he said this is exactly the time when we do need to be discussing important issues like this; of course both of them won't say anything thought provoking, but they need to discuss and debate such an important issue and I hope they get asked the tough questions. I think McCain just isn't that bright and won't understand the fundamentals of what is going on in the economy and knows a debate right now focused on the economy will just hurt him further. Look at what a dumbass McCain looks like here when asked about the economy, for example: Yea, keep relying on Phil Gramm, genius.
September 24, 200818 yr It seems to me like McCain really doesn't want to have a big debate when he's in such a bad situation with the economy. I wouldn't blame him either. Bush is speaking tonight, most likely because he sees that Congress isn't interested in giving him what he wants this time, in the form of a big fat check for $700 BILLION with no strings attached. I don't think it's going to pass in current form. debate was focused on foreign policy and security. They had no topics on the economy on fridays debate. But I agree he wants to avoid the fight over economy and is trying to make actions speak.
September 25, 200818 yr Author this is a very risky move by McCain. . .I think he will debate on Friday

If W comes out tonight with a doom and gloom scenario if Wash doesn't act now, and the Dow drops 500+ tomorrow...Barack would be looking like a fool, for basically saying..."if you need me, call me and I'll show up" I think McCain realize he is in a dire situation, and he is playing a desperate move. However, it could work
September 25, 200818 yr Now reports are coming out saying that a deal on this bailout will almost certainly be done by Friday.

Obviously it would be better if he was a couple of points up as he was a week ago but he's not in a dire situation right now.

The polls are trending down on Obama's favor btw, I just read that Obama is going to Washington at the request of W to meet with McCain and the leaders of the Senate. Will find out soon enough
September 25, 200818 yr Author President Bush invited John McCain, Barack Obama and congressional leaders to the White House on Thursday to discuss his administration's proposed bailout of the financial industry and press them to back the plan.
September 25, 200818 yr I think this is a weak move and I don't think it is sincere. Obama and McCain need to be campaigning. I realize they are still Senators but being a Presidential candidate should come first.

He should be using the economy to his advantage on the campaign trail. Oh wait, that wouldn't work.

They are the current leaders of their parties.
September 25, 200818 yr Obama was actually the first to propose a joint statement earlier today, according to news articles.
September 25, 200818 yr Suspending the campaign and possibly avoiding the first debate is not necessary, IMO. As Obama alluded to - multi tasking is good.
September 25, 200818 yr Author me thinks that there was a bit of orchestration between McCain and W, or W threw in the towel calling the joined meeting

September 25, 200818 yr Here is the thing. This thing doesn't get through unless McCain gives congressional republicans cover to support it by supporting it himself. He wanted to use this has a pivot, but congressional republicans don't want to be left hanging after they support it and then he decides to oppose it as irresponsible, just so he can distinguish himself from Obama. Since that didn't happen, McCain became the key to this thing passing. He has to lend his support to the bill. None of this requires either his presence of Obama's presence in Washington. Neither of them are on the committee that write anything, negotiate anything, or push the bills to the mail floor. There really was no way for McCain to grab the horns of the bull that was tossing him around like a ragdoll this week. So they threw out a political stunt. Suspend the campaign, go to washington, and do something he could have done anyway without having to demand a delay in he first debate. This is not putting country first. Last time I checked, electing the next president of the United States was a pretty important thing. So having a debate on foreign policy if a pretty important thing. Wanting to present oneself to the American people so they can make a wise intelligent choice is not being selfish and political and is pretty damn important. If this required a ton of McCain and Obama's time, that would make sense. It does not.
