NEW YORK -- Jerry Manuel and the New York Mets were closing in on a new contract Friday.

Progress in his contract talks was first reported by foxsports.com.

The sides were working on a deal that would be for two guaranteed seasons and would include a club option for 2011. The Mets hoped to finish an agreement later Friday and hold a Saturday telephone conference call.

Manuel took over on an interim basis June 17, when New York was 34-35. While the Mets built a 3?-game NL East lead in September, they were eliminated from postseason contention on the final day of the season for the second straight year. They finished at 89-73.

Manuel, who had been Randolph's bench coach, was AL Manager of the Year in 2000 when he led the Chicago White Sox to a league-best 95-67. He was fired by Chicago in 2003 following his sixth season as manager.
