Even as they pursue free-agent starting pitchers CC Sabathia, Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett, the Yankees could also have an eye on Padres right-hander Jake Peavy.

FoxSports.com reports the Yanks and Padres have had "numerous discussions" about Peavy, according to a Major League source. The Braves recently announced they were pulling out of Peavy trade discussions. Padres GM Kevin Towers said Thursday that negotiations with the Cubs were also over.

With Peavy having a full no-trade clause and expressing a strong preference to stay in the National League according to agent Barry Axelrod, a trade to an American League club could get complicated.

FoxSports.com also lists the Angels as a possible AL destination for Peavy.

According to columnist Tim Sullivan of The San Diego Union-Tribune, Padres general manager Kevin Towers sees the potential for talks with the Yankees, adding that New York has the young arms San Diego covets in Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy.

The Yankees have expressed the desire to reel in as many as three established starters this offseason in their quest to return to the playoffs.

Axelrod told the Union-Tribune that Peavy hasn't ruled any club out.

"We have not created any list of acceptable teams [or] a list of possibly acceptable teams," the Union-Tribune quoted Axelrod as saying. "Our position is to sit here and wait until a proposed trade is in place and give input on whether that would be acceptable or not."

Towers let it be known that nothing on the Peavy front has crystallized yet. "As of right now, there hasn't been a deal that's been presented to us that we could accept," Towers told the Union-Tribune.

Wow if they get him with CC and lowe or AJ and they stay healthy and dont win the WS I will be convinced you cant buy a WS.

I was under the impression that Peavy's AL list was rather short, but I guess the league's largest payroll has a funny way of changing those feelings. Yankee fans turn into spoiled children during the offseason, in need of some serious placation from their rich father. I'm sure it must be nice knowing that your team's F.O. can just throw money at a problem, but I like the idea of suffering for a few years for the sake of talent development. I suppose being a Marlins fan has turned me into a content defeatist.

Melky Cabrera is terrible. I would assume it would involve Robinson Cano and Phil Hughes/Ian Kennedy.

I dont know about cano. It would have to involve hughes though i imagine. Melky does suck though I never saw much in him except for a good arm and some speed.

No it'd be Cano/Hughes... I've read somewhere that the Yanks wouldn't mind moving Cano (who does have some good value) - so this'd be a good opportunity for that

Cano is still young but Im still unsure about him being a future star like people predicted he would be.
