City meeting moved up to March 6; county meeting set for March 9

The final votes on a new baseball stadium for the Florida Marlins have been moved up a week.

Miami commissioners will attempt to vote once again on the final contract pieces of the stadium puzzle on March 4, while Miami-Dade commissioners have set March 5 for their vote.

An attempt to pass twin votes at the county and city failed Friday, setting off a scramble in which Miami Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez continued the city's meeting until March 12.

But when City Manager Pete Hernandez received word from Sanchez that March 4 was acceptable, the date was changed.

The move signals that Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones will attend the meeting in two weeks.

Spence-Jones was absent on maternity leave Friday when city commissioners deadlocked 2-2 on a stadium vote, leaving the final verdict in limbo. She was expected to vote in favor of the stadium.

The city and county will vote on stadium-related contracts to cement a $609 million plan to build a new ballpark and parking facilities in Little Havana. The team hopes to open the retractable roof stadium in 2012.

But a move Friday by Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff to gain a series of concessions from the Marlins derailed the project -- at least for now. Once the city's vote failed, county commissioners canceled their scheduled vote Friday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, city, county and Marlins officials were still negotiating the final contract terms to be considered in two weeks.

Miami Herald staff writer Jack Dolan contributed to this report.

Well that at least makes the wait not as bad, but this delay should not have even been necessary. Let get this done already!

one day city one day county that good move so if city go long as last week the county wont need wait for city meeting too end have to cancel meeting like last week their can meet as long and donot need worry that county is waiting

Why not hold the County meeting before March 4th? Is there a specific reason that it has to be done after the City meeting?

It has to be at the same time I guess. But the city meeting isnt before because theyre scared it will take Spence 3 weeks to give birth

Procedurally the City's approval has to come before the County approval.
