February 19, 200917 yr We're gonna have 4 corner IFs to start off with, with only one of them clearly being a bench player (Helms). What's the expectation at this point as far as who plays where? McPherson at 3B with Gaby at 1B? What about Cantu? In my time doubting Hermida I've wondered: if Hermida fails to produce, can Cantu play LF? Who do you guys expect to start at 1B and 3B?

Dude, just 1 thread without bashing Hermida. Just one. Personally, I hope Jay Gibbons makes the roster over Gaby Sanchez and serves as the 'other' half of the McPherson platoon and the 4th outfielder. That fixes the depth chart immensely and allows us to keep two middle infielders on the bench. Yea, we'd have problems with a bunch of RHP only guys (McPherson, Gibbons, Baker, maybe Uggla, Hermida), but you could always play Helms at 3B vs most LHP and just roll with it other days. But we'll see what shows up in camp. If not, it's going to obviously be a platoon for the "other" spot with Gaby and Helms splitting LHP, Gaby and McDallas splitting RHP. I highly doubt any of them can play in the outfield. McPherson would be your best shot, but that would put added stress on his back and legs which is the whole problem with him. Spot duty at best here. I do agree though, it's very problematic we have 3 outfielders and 10 infielders penciled in heading into camp. And to other guy, before I call you an idiot, please explain to me why DFAing McPherson helps this franchise.
February 19, 200917 yr Well... duh... Lou... McPherson specializes in OBP and Power... not teh speed or teh glovez0rz.... Lemme just save you the time, Lou:
February 19, 200917 yr Just feel there's not going to be a roster spot available for McPherson anytime soon.

I wasn't bashing him (this time), just throwing in what I think is a reasonably possible hypothetical that would allow us to play all 3 of Cantu, Gaby, and Dallas, which I think would be nice assuming none of them tank.
February 19, 200917 yr Just feel there's not going to be a roster spot available for McPherson anytime soon. Why? Helms, Amezaga, and Rabelo (if we don't sign an alternative catcher) are all locks for the bench. That leaves two open spots assuming we carry twelve pitchers. McPherson would have to be atrocious in spring training to not secure one of those spots. My guess is the last spot will go to either Andino, Bonifacio, or Gibbons (assuming we don't sign a fourth outfielder in which case he would recieve the final slot).
February 19, 200917 yr I assume Dallas would be the favorite for an OF position, even though I also imagine Cantu would be able to handle it better.
February 19, 200917 yr are we going to have any backups to Hanley at SS if he isn't available to play? Or are we going to rely on Andino if that occasion occurs?
February 19, 200917 yr .....Amezaga? Amezaga is a very good back up SS. He's a starting SS on bad teams. One of the best gloves in the league and SS is an offensive-barren position anyway.
February 19, 200917 yr Just feel there's not going to be a roster spot available for McPherson anytime soon. Terrible roster management if that's the case. I don't think a convincing argument could be made that having a guy like Gaby Sanchez or Emilio Bonifacio on the roster from day one is going to be that much better than having Mcpherson that we give him up for nothing while it costs us nothing to send the other two down to the minors until the situation develops to where they are needed.
