Just saw this on ESPN.com:

Rincon chooses free agency

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers say right-hander Juan Rincon has chosen free agency over an outright assignment.

The team announced Rincon's decision on Monday, a week after Dontrelle Willis took his spot on the roster. Rincon had a 5.23 ERA in 10 games.

He signed a minor league contract with the Tigers last winter. The reliever was 3-3 last year with a 5.86 ERA in 47 appearances for the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians.

He is 32-27 with a 3.84 ERA since making his debut with the Twins in 2001. Minnesota designated him for assignment last June, leading to him becoming a free agent. He landed with the Indians after signing a minor league contract.

Rincon's best season was 2004, when he was 11-6 with a 2.63 ERA in 77 games.

Rincon would be a great upgrade for this bullpen, and I doubt we would have to pay much more than the minimum. While he has struggled recently, we all know that this team does well with reclamation projects.

To replace whom?

Unless Penn or Hopper is moving to the starting rotation long term (and that seems doubtful with the bright news on Anibal), then I don't think we need another BP arm.

Now, if Ani's return gets pushed back, we may need a starter, or a BP arm if either of the combo of Hoppenn slide into the 5th spot.

3 years ago, yes. but right now he's not an upgrade over anyone in the pen unless bandenhop or penn become a permanent 5th starter

I should have noted that this signing depends on whether Sanchez returns on time or not. If we have to have Badenhop or Penn in the rotation for awhile, it would be an upgrade IMO.

It shouldn't be a while though, from what I understand (or think I understand).

NOLA does have a lot of pitching problems.

Feel bad for the city.

But that's the best you give him at the moment.
