June 11, 200917 yr I was wondering just the other day if any of the umps have a fav baseball team, or is that kept a secret? I mean it would be strange to see a popular ump in the stands at a world series one day with a Braves cap on, and then by next season seeing that ump calling balls and strikes at a Braves Marlins Game!

If there is even a slight hint of partiality, that's the end of their careers. That said, they try to make sure there is no conflict of interest. One example is umpire Jim Wolf, the brother of pitcher Randy Wolf. He, by MLB rules, can't be on the umpire crew for any games involving his brother.

I think he can be on the crew but cant call balls and strikes if Randy is pitching.

And yeah, Dom has a point. He is allowed to be on the crew but can't be the home plate ump.
