June 14, 200917 yr Putting up a solid line in Greensboro after returning from injury: .278/.369/.485 (.854), 14/13 K/BB, 5 HR, 16 RBI, 1 SB (110 PA) Solid K/BB ratio and showing some decent pop (power is a question with this guy). Granted he's 20 and playing in Greensboro but a promotion shouldn't be far off if he keeps it up. I think alot of people don't seem to realize that he was the centerpiece in the Willingham/Olsen deal. He's a good prospect to monitor as he's probably entered top 15 prospect territory.

I wouldn't put too much into his power since it's greensboro. He has almost identical peripherals to chris coghlan, and you can see what happened to his power when he left there. Smolinski is still a good spec, but don't overrate him for hitting power in a hitters park/league.

I look at him as a Chris Coghlan type prospect if everything goes right and he maintains that K/BB ratio. I wasn't overrating his power, just noting that it's a good sign. Jupiter is obviously going to see a drop in his power numbers but his other peripherals project well. He does have 203 PA in A ball from last year so I'm hoping a promotion isn't too far away. In any case, Jupiter should be a good test for him.
June 14, 200917 yr Thats great to hear, I hope he continues to do well and we'll see him at Jupiter soon. Any word on the other guy in the trade Dean?

Give him a Jupiter call up at the end of the year, then put him in Jax next year regardless of how he does in Jupiter. That would put him on an '11 timetable. That would then give us both him and dominguez as probable 3b specs for '11. depth=good
June 15, 200917 yr Author Thats great to hear, I hope he continues to do well and we'll see him at Jupiter soon. Any word on the other guy in the trade Dean? Not sure where he is right now. I haven't heard much about him other than he's possibly in extended spring training. That was a couple weeks ago though.

Wonder if the Nats knew the guy was having problems and were happy to dump him on the Fish?
June 15, 200917 yr It's definitely encouraging to see an infielder slugging .485. As others have mentioned that will probably go down, but to have a middle infielder that can hit the ball with power is always nice. And I don't know if many people notice, but our great power prospect Cameron Maybin's highest slugging percentage in a full minor league season is .486.
June 15, 200917 yr it also came in the FSL and Maybin never got to play in a park like Greensboro. Not really apt comparison.
June 15, 200917 yr it also came in the FSL and Maybin never got to play in a park like Greensboro. Not really apt comparison. I wasn't necessarily trying to compare the two as much as just trying to show that Smolinski is doing a fine job even if he has the benefit of a good park.
June 15, 200917 yr Daniel Pertusati is another 2B I have hopes for his current subpar season notwithstanding.
June 15, 200917 yr As much as I hate to say this, Smolinski was not the centerpiece of the Willingham + Olsen trade, it was Bonifacio

To anyone with an understanding of prospect rankings, it was Smolinski. The trade might not have gone down with that understanding but Smolinski is the best piece.
