Damn its going to be even tougher to sign our players back because the marlins front office is unwilling to give the contracts a no trade clause. They say its after the fiasco with Charles Johnson last year.

 

Turns out Jeff Conine didn't sign his reworked Marlins contract, which runs through 2005, until just before the World Series. That's because his agent, Michael Watkins, spent seven weeks trying without success to have some sort of no-trade clause inserted in the deal.

Look at that just when we thought Conine had been extended it didnt really happen until right before the world series.

 

"They're not too keen to give no-trade clauses and they're asking for discounts," the agent said. "You can't have both. If they're looking for less years and less money, and they're looking for a hometown discount with the ability to trade a player and salary deferral, they're not going to sign anyone if that's going to be their tack."

 

Very true, the marlins are asking for too much from there players. They want hometown discount and no trade clauses.

 

Its going to be a very intersting off season. Hopefully filled with more joy than disappointment.

We want the players to give hometown discounts, but give the team the ability to trade them away from HOME? I'm sorry, but is one or the other.

You have a point, CapeFish. The problem is in a competitive market the point may be made at the expense of the deal. Beinfest could be the GM who changes the face of the game, but that is a long-term equation -- you know, lose the battle, win the war. I'm not sure a Marlins fan-base will be around long enough to benefit from that long-term equation.

Unfortunately right now...you can't have both. The Florida Marlins aren't the New York Yankees and can offer all of their players these types of incentives.

 

 

While its great to see Beinfest stand his ground and tell the players either one or the other, I hope that the players are willing to compromise and do whatever it takes to stay on this team and make another run at it next year. :thumbup

Sounds like Beinfest isn't making it "policy" though:

 

Asked over the weekend about the policy toward no-trades, Beinfest seemed to crack the door ajar.

 

"I don't think [our policy is] anything hard and fast," Beinfest said. "I don't think anything is steadfast right now. Based on our experience with no-trades, it's not something that we'll probably look to include.

 

"Again, I don't want to say anything, and have it change and have people say we're wishy-washy."
