November 16, 200322 yr Marlins Double-A outfielder Chris Aguila ended a strong Arizona Fall League with an opposite-field homer last week. That gave him team highs of five homers and 24 RBI on a club that included former Marlins prospect Adrian Gonzalez. Aguila, who could surface as a reserve outfielder in the majors next year, patiently worked with Miguel Cabrera during the month he spent learning left field at Carolina. "He still has my glove," Aguila said with a smile. "I told him he owes me some bats next spring. He's a great kid who deserves everything that's come his way." ... The fall league wasn't as kind to Marlins Class A first baseman Jason Stokes, who hit .145 and posted a miserable OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .459. One walk and 22 strikeouts left one scout shaking his head and saying, "I think he's a bust." ... * did the Marlins make a mistake with Stokes and Adrian? The Big debate will start now http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...,2457286.column Under the radar team for Pudge? One National League GM believes the Orioles are playing possum in their early coolness toward Pudge Rodriguez. "I still think they're going to make a strong push for Pudge," the GM said. "They miscalculated last year when they should have signed him, and I think their people still believe they should have gotten the player. And they have a ton of money to spend." ...
November 16, 200322 yr Im not too worried about Stokes.... and Im not sure how you think Baltimore is under the radar for anyone at this point
November 16, 200322 yr You know what bothers me? NO ONE READS MY POSTS! :banghead There was an article that I posted that discussed Stokes' wrist injury and some of the problems he had as a result. He wasnt totally healed, but he wouldnt allow that to be used as an excuse. I think there is some truth to it. I dont think he totally rehabbed his wrist and never got the chance to do so. I dont know if playing in the AFL was such a smart thing. He should have been rehabbing his wrist if it was bothering him and get healthy. Right now, I would like to see him rehab and work out. I think Stokes is going to be fine. Gonzalez never projected much beyond Mark Grace anyway. Sorry, but we could sign a guy like that. Stokes has got great upside. Be patient. The Orioles are not going to sign Pudge. Their problems extend way beyond a one-player-fix. I think they will end up acquiring Lee, and maybe even sign a guy like Guillen. Ponson could come back too. They have a lot of holes to fill, and yes, they have some money. But it would be unwise for them to toss too much money after Pudge. I think everyone is waiting for the Marlins to set the market on him anyway. So there wont be any activity until that happens.
November 16, 200322 yr You know what bothers me? NO ONE READS MY POSTS! :banghead The Orioles are not going to sign Pudge. jonny, dont get your panties in a bunch, some of us read your posts... and i see no reason why Baltimore doesnt try to sign Pudge... they have so much money for this offseason, its sickening.... im just saying, dont be shocked if Pudge is an Oriole
November 16, 200322 yr from baseballamerica.com You never should read too much into AFL statistics. They're just a small sample size, the equivalent of one month during the regular season. Yes, Stokes' numbers are discouraging, but I think the 941 at-bats he has had in the minors (.285/.352/.514) outweigh the 62 he has had in Arizona. Stokes does chase pitches out of the strike zone, but he also has tremendous power and is just 21. I attribute his lukewarm .258/.312/.448 performance in the high Class A Florida State League in great part to his offseason wrist surgery. His wrist is fine now, but it takes a while to regain strength after that kind of operation. If Stokes can gain some plate discipline, he'll be a major league star. If he doesn't, he'll put up numbers like the 2000-03 version of Jeromy Burnitz.
November 16, 200322 yr I think they are making too bold a prediction in comparing him to a Jeremy Burnitz if he doesn't develop plate discipline. We are all hoping he turns it around, but it honestly isn't looking good for Stokes.
November 16, 200322 yr This same thing happened with Adrian Gonzalez earlier this year, he was struggling and people thought he was a bust But he is only 20 or 21 (like stokes)
