Near future left Handed bullpen prospects

It seems like we haven't been able to get a lefty who can actually excel at getting lefties out. The help the Marlins need might not be too far away.

Dan Jennings, the 23 year old 9th round pick from the 2008 draft out of Nebraska has been pretty intriguing recently. He had pretty smooth seasons in Jamestown and Greensboro and he's now in Jacksonville after a few innings in Jupiter. He had 26 hits in 29 innings to go with 30 strikeouts. Walks have been a problem this year with 20 in 29 innings in AA, but many of them were in the beginning of his time at Jacksonville and he has an acceptable 3.3 BB/9 for his career.

Some of his numbers vs. LHP's

AVG .238 (.275 against (RHP)

11.69 K/9

3.34 BB/9

2.45 FIP

1.27 WHIP

We could see him in September or at some point next season. I think the organization would call up Meyer or Jones this season before messing with Jacksonville arms,

Another kid is Wade Korpi, the 24 year old 20th round pick out of Notre Dame in 2008.

Korpi's held his own at every level he's been in (Jamestown, Greensboro, Jupiter) with a career 3.65 ERA and 8.0 h/9, 4.1 BB/9 , 9.6 K/9 and and hasn't had a hard time adjusting to AA Jacksonville with 14 hits in 16 innings to go with 13 k's and 6 walks.

And against lefties in his career...

.238 AVG (.253 against RHP)

7.57 K/9

2.81 FIP

1.11 WHIP

Unless I'm missing someone, this is pretty much what have have coming up the next few years unless Rasmussen ends up getting moved to the bullpen. They don't look too bad, hopefully they can continue pitching well, because the situation right now with LHP relief is bleak to say the least.

There is no guarantee west and miller remain starters. Like you said, Meyer and Hunter in AAA, Jennings in AA, and also no guarantee Hand and Olmos remain starters in A. Let alone, Chad james and Rasmussen. Plus pinto and tank are hanging around in some capacity.

A lot of lefties around. Someone is eventually going to work out.

I was referring more to the future of the bullpen when the Marlins reach their prime in a year or too. I said in the post i doubt either will make it up this season. We need some young bullpen armed to solidify the pen in the future. I'm not too syked about Meyer, Pinto Tankersley in the future when this teams geared to win. It's not always easy to sign a quality left handed bullpen arm.

We have other problems ya, but the pen seems to be one of the biggest. It may not be the biggest concern, but it is a concern.

Tankersley's a part of the pen's future.

Career against lefties

.223 batting average

.311 on base percentage

.349 slugging percentage

.660 .OPS against

That's a LOOGY. He's only 27, and considering he's strictly a LOOGY, he should be pretty cheap for the organization for years. I think he's a keeper.

I'm not ready to crown a guy who hasn't pitched well in the majors since 2007 just yet.

Fair enough, but I'm judging the guy more on how he's pitched against lefties WHEN HEALTHY. Difficult to pitch with a fractured elbow, to be fair.

It would be nice if every pitcher can pitch the same after injuries. Hopefully he does.

But i expect West to be a starter in the future. Miller will never through enough strikes to be LOOGY at best. Jones and Pinto are better against righties. Meyer hasn't been all the good at all since the first half of last season. And we don't even know if Tankersley will be effective again yet, don't mind me if I start to look at what we have coming up from the farm system to get lefties out.
