Berardino Article

Just a couple intersting tid bits on bonuses and some information on who they plan to sign back from the bench.

According to Berardino the Marlins let go Fox because they plan to sign Mordy back for a little less than 500,000.

yeah, Mordy definately made Fox expendable. Said he'd be willing to stay in Florida for less than he made last year. How's that for a team guy? (not like he could demand much anyway, but it's nice to see)

Here's the key to the article though. Looper's performance bonus for pitching in 64 games.

Deposed closer Braden Looper finished 64 games this season, netting him an additional $800,000 in performance bonuses. That pushed his 2003 take to $2.4 million, a 50-percent increase over his $1.6 million base salary.

As a fifth-year arbitration-eligible, Looper now can work off the higher figure in determining his salary for next season. Instead of an expected jump into the $2.8 million range next year, Looper figures to make about $4.2 million through arbitration.

Not only does that make him much less likely to return to the payroll-conscious Marlins, it could result in Looper not being offered a contract by the Dec. 20 deadline. The Marlins are trying to trade Looper, but other clubs are understandably reluctant to take on such a hefty salary for a pitcher who may or may not close for them.

Yikes.... Might spell the end for Looper here. If money is equal, & they plan to sign one of them (I'm not convinced they'll sign either one, btw) I would imagine Urbina's the more attractive target.

Well Mordi did have those Walk Off Homeruns :) .

Yea, Bringing Mordi back is good. he has always been solid of the bench for us.

Loop for 4.2 million would be about as fair a price as ARod for 25 mil.

I'd give him a 2yr contract worth 6mil. At least I would, I know there are a lot loop bashers but I have always liked him.

I say good bye to Looper - he is too soft for my liking anyway. We could use that 4.2MM on at least 2 strong relievers with the market right now (Baez, Lightenberg, Chad Fox, of course - take your pick.).

Well I can't say anything bad about such a team player as Mordecai, but Fox was faster and more versatile and ended up signing at a much cheaper price.

Both of them are good and solid utility/bench player. I have to go with Mordy, due to his clutch hitting during regular and playoff (3 RBI bomb in Wrigley after Bartman debacle)
