Ok so I am in my final year at university studying Accounting & Finance. We have to do a dissertation (about 15-20,000 words) on a topic completely of our choice. Last year I enjoyed management accounting, in particular bonus and incentive schemes. As a result I plan to do my research on this by linking the theory behind them to American sports, in particular baseball and maybe football, which will provide a different view compared to the normal over here since those sports are not mainstream in the UK.

However I am not particularly sure what specific angle or "question" to ask in regards to the topic of incentive/bonus schemes in baseball, such as do they work? Are they effective? Or whatever.

If anyone could spend a minute helping me out here by providing a potential angle I will greatly appreciate it!!!!

I bet NNY would know something about this or Marlinslou.

I do know Joe Torre does not believe in incentive bonuses.

Cool. Anyone else have any thoughts? Please!

One cool topic is players in the final year of their contracts, and seeing if they have a performance bump.

Yeh that is something I'm considering adding in. Gonna be an absolute b*tch to do this whole thing, but have until the end of March to finish.

I'm not sure you'll be able to find adequate information about the structure of contracts to make your study viable, to be honest. You'd need to know the specific wording of the contracts, as well as what the rest of the contract says, to make a reasonable determination.

This is what I was going to suggest. Or possibly comparing the performance of players with incentive contracts versus those with non-incentive contracts. A useful resource in that would be Cot's baseball contracts. http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/

Yeh, would the Cot's baseball contracts not do the job for this?

I don't know if they report actual literal chunks of text from the contracts, and the wording could play a significant role. I'm just saying that it's a potential hole in your research, no matter how otherwise thoroughly and cleverly done.

Yeh absolutely it could be an issue.

We are encouraged to make up some form of interview/survey to add to our research so I am considering e-mailing the organisations regarding incentives (such as maybe asking if they believe them to be effective etc) although I am obviously expecting extremely low response rates.

Hah, yeah, good luck with that...

Usually when you send mail to a club they send you back this fabricated thank-you letter and don't really acknowledge anything you said.

(about 15-20,000 words)

Holy crap! 500 words is a pain in ass to me. I think I'd hang myself if I had to do a dissertation.:o

If there's other Villains besides the ones everyone's familiar with, why not use them? Why use the same 4 or 5 over again? Hollywood is desperate for originality. I'm not a comic book geek so I've never heard of Hush or Black Mask or who knows how many other Villains. Are there any female Villains in the Batman Universe besides Cat Woman? I think a female Villain would be a nice change of pace.

Yep it's a nightmare. I have now dropped the idea of the topic of baseball, found an alternative subject which will be easier to do and contain (probably) more accurate info.

What?

So that's what happened to that that post. I thought I closed the tab before I hit post or something when it wasn't in the The Dark Knight Rises thread. So then what happened to the post that's supposed to be here?
