The Rundown - Florida Marlins

The Sports Xchange

Nov. 24, 2003

HOT TOPIC

Catcher Pudge Rodriguez and the Marlins are working toward a Dec. 7 deadline, the last day teams can offer their free agents salary arbitration. Under the one-year, $10 million deal he signed in January, the Marlins agreed not to offer him arbitration. The Marlins were believed to have offered a two-year deal worth $15 million.

Despite the looming deadline, the team feels no urgency in part because Rodriguez isn't getting a lot of offers from other clubs. He turns 32 on Nov. 30, and catchers historically don't hold up into their thirties.

But Florida may be forced to work out a deal with Rodriguez because of backup catcher Ramon Castro's legal problems. Castro is facing trial on rape charges, and his future is uncertain.

The team has already discussed offers with free agent 2B Luis Castillo and All-Star 3B Mike Lowell but hasn't finalized deals yet.

PERSONNEL

The Marlins may make a pitch for Korean League 1B Seung-Yeop Lee if they can't retain Gold Glover Derrek Lee. Lee is eligible for arbitration and could get $7 million in 2004. Left fielder Jeff Conine is likeliest to move to first base, but the Korean Lee made an impression with the Marlins at spring training last year. ... RHP Justin Wayne will pitch in winter ball and hopes to make the team in spring training. Wayne struggled in Triple-A Albuquerque last season in part because he lost command of his two-seam fastball (or sinker). ... RHP David Manning will get a shot with the Marlins this spring after signing a minor league contract. Manning, 31, had played 12 years in the minors before getting called up by the Milwaukee Brewers in August. He went 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA in two starts and went 6-8 with a 4.91 ERA in 23 starts for the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. ... CF Juan Pierre earned a $400,000 bonus by finishing 10th in the MVP voting. RHP Braden Looper earned $800,000 in incentive bonuses during the season by finishing 64 games.

Either way that sounds right on track for us about Pudge and others.

Heres the other part

Earlier, the Palm Beach Post, citing a source familiar with the talks, reported Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria had approved a 2004 payroll of up to $60 million, about $10 million more than in 2003. The newspaper said Florida officials believed that will be enough to retain the team's core players, such as Castillo and arbitration-eligble third baseman Mike Lowell.

Isn't 60 mil the magic Vlad #?

Seriously though, as we get closer and closer to the Pearl Harbor anniversary I can't help but think we will be switching from a Puerto Rican to a Dominican as our big money balla.

Here is hoping either Pudge gets a heart sometime soon or Castro can come through like we all think he can.

can you write any smaller?

anyway $62mil is the number for Vlad.... close enough

I like my Impact font thank you very much.

what do you mean?

Just some news, but the Marlins TV rights for Broadcast TV are up for 2004. The Marlins and their partner Fox Sports Net (contract for cable through 2011) will put them up for bid and it will go to the highest bidder. The last contract with WAMI/Univision/PAX got $3.2 million a year for the Marlins and FSN to split. A new contract would probably have FSN and the Marlins buying time on the winning station (like an infomercial of sorts) and selling the ad time themselves. The Devil Rays did this on a trial basis in 2003 and will do it again in 2004 with PAX and raked in $5 million in the Tampa market alone!

Thanks for the info Cape. Even though it is of little consequence since I have cable and live in Palmetto Bay...

That would pay off some expense methinks for the stadium if it works.

Actually, i was thinking payroll costs. like the extra $2 million it could take to sign Vlad under Ramp's plan ;)

$5 million (minimum Marlins would get in new deal) - $3.2 million (existing deal) = $1.8 million Ramp needs.

Thanks for the math, I was wondering where the extra money came from.

what do you mean? The default size control

And looks good Cape :thumbup

I really dont think Pudge will be back. I think he is making a big mistake too - this is a championship team, and will be so for some time. He could not only secure his legacy as a HOF, but as a winnner too. Oh well, guess money is more important.

I have tried to deny Vlad coming here. I have tried to be rational about it, but I keep returning to a feeling that he is on his way here - if not already offered a deal. I think in order to do that we do need to deal Lee, Redman, and lose either Castillo or Pudge. All that, it seems, is going to happen. Vlad will allow Cabs to go to LF and Conine to 1B. If we could still sign (Korean) Lee, we could platoon him this year and work him in as the everyday 1B should Stokes not pan out when Conine retires a Marlin. By then, we should have another title... ;)

Cape, interesting post about the info-mercial technique to generate revenue. Seems a very shrewd tactic.

I think, personally, we should sign a cheap veteran catcher. Not an offensive guy, just one to work with the pitchers. Ramon can still start, and he will be the insurance.

how about Benito Santiago?

Not a bad idea.

Vlad could come here, but it would require Encarnacion and Redman to be dealt.

:::waves::: bye to Encarnacion and Redman ::waves:::

:::shakes Vlad hand::: for coming to the fish
