It's "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched." And in reference to this...You can count your eggs (FA offers) but not your chickens (FA signings). But your general meaning came through. It's way too early. Wait til during or after the Owners Meetings coming up, or maybe even after the Rule V draft. I'm sure they are in contact with the real preferable FA's they are after. Probably Buehrle and Reyes, in particular. Get them inked and then hit the trades. We would have protected players from the Rule V that may be interesting trade bait for something that fills out our needs. And truth be known, it wouldn't bother me if Pujols stays in Cards Red. It's only right. But eggs don't hatch into more eggs. It's not so much that I don't think we can afford Pujols right now. It's a few years into that contract he wants that I have to wonder about. We have $$$ now, but it still has to be spent wisely. The other teams in our division will not be sitting back and just watching us improve. One or two bad contracts can be crippling. And I would hate to see him leave STL.
