From before the decision was made:

CHICAGO -- The Diamondbacks are beginning what manager Kirk Gibson called the "most crucial part of the season," a stretch of 53 games in which they have just two days off.

But that could change.

The Diamondbacks have a 23-game stretch without a day off from Aug. 14-Sept. 5. Problem is, that's against the rules, per Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, and the wheels are in motion for a scheduling change.

Apparently, the 23-game stretch initially went unnoticed by anyone with the Diamondbacks, the union or MLB, but there are indications the team is looking to play a day/night doubleheader at Chase Field sometime in August, perhaps during the Miami Marlins series Aug. 20-23.

A split doubleheader, in which the stadium is cleared between games, would allow the team to not lose gate revenue from a game.

"No Club shall be scheduled, or rescheduled if practicable, to play more than 20 consecutive dates without an open day," reads Article V©(12) of the CBA.

The Diamondbacks play 20 consecutive games to open the second half. After an off day on Aug. 2, they'll play 10 games in a row before another off day on Aug. 13. They have four off days in September.

Should a doubleheader go off as anticipated, it would be the first at Chase Field since the franchise started play in 1998. The team has played 12 doubleheaders, all on the road.
