Looks like your reading comprehension is lacking. I'm saying that Bell had nothing to do with Wilson, but at the same time that money could have been spent elsewhere more efficiently or better yet--saved for later, which would have made the cost-cutting for 2013 more palatable.

 

If these types of signings had no consequences, the Marlins wouldn't be needing to scale back payroll for next season.

 

 

I know what you said, jackass. I was simply pointing out Bells money had no effect on the massive contract they tried to bestow upon Wilson or what the next payrolls going to be.

 

And as far as scaling back payroll, I don't believe it as much as one should. I can't seem to wrap my head around Loria just giving up on building a contender while still having players like Reyes, Buerhle, Johnson on the payroll.

 

When those players leave, then I'm scared about salary cuts.

 

If he has a 70 win team and a 118 million payroll, why wouldn't he cut it back as far as he could and get the same results.

 

I see Loria adding to the payroll to be quite honest.

So why "point it out" if it doesn't go against what I'm saying?

 

As far as payroll, I'm only speaking toward what was communicated recently. The team typically adheres to a model where the payroll corresponds to the revenue. Since the team is losing money, they'll have to reduce payroll.

 

Furthermore, I don't think that the core of Reyes, Stanton, and Johnson is really that close to competing. Look how this season ended up. They are far enough away from competing that the problems cannot be solved in the offseason through just free agency.

 

And ultimately whether or not the Marlins end up cutting payroll, Bell's overpaid salary still carries consequences with it. Even if payroll is kept steady, having 9 million on the books limits the team's options.

 

The lesson is that no team (other than maybe the Yankees) can afford to overvalue players and still remain competitive.
