December 5, 200322 yr Defense?? Offense?? what were his expectations entering the mlb?? his numbers look like he sucks, even thought he had that concusion
December 5, 200322 yr this is from espn.com rumblings and grumblings "After dealing Derrek Lee for Hee Seop Choi, the Marlins' best-case scenario is to have Choi win the first-base job. But with Jeff Conine still hanging around as a first-base option, Choi will have to win the job. And there are quite a few scouts out there who aren't sure Choi will ever match his hoopla. "I love that deal for the Cubs," says one NL scout. "Hee Seop Choi has gotten a lot of hype, but I'm not convinced he'll ever live up to it. His strength and his power are impressive. But he really struggles against good breaking balls. He's not Derrek Lee. I know that. Derrek Lee might hit 50 home runs playing in Wrigley."
December 5, 200322 yr Amazing that earlier this year he was the front runner for Rookie of the Year :shifty
December 5, 200322 yr Defense?? Offense?? what were his expectations entering the mlb?? his numbers look like he sucks, even thought he had that concusion He is said to have an excellent glove. Being a lefty must help his defense as well at first base. On offense he apparently can get a major hold of the ball, and his average wasn't too bad before he was hurt. Bill will work with him and make him kick a**.
December 5, 200322 yr i dont think he will kick a**...one hitting coach wont do it i think like the article said that he was overhyped..its better than nothin but i prefer conine at 1st and us signing a left fielder
December 5, 200322 yr sheff#1 probably has never seen him play. Saw Choi play on WGN twice and he looked very good. Gets on base well and the glove ain't too bad.
December 5, 200322 yr you cant really "overhype" numbers...and its just one report, I'm sure theres many others that says Choi is the real deal.
December 5, 200322 yr im not sayin ive seen him play or anything like that but how can u say someone is the real deal when he hasnt done anything? players like pujols and matsui and ichiro are the real deal because they proved it..this move was not about gettin some one good back it was to clear money to sign lowell and castillo and if he turns out to be good its a plus..they have heard from scouts and ppl that he prob isnt very good but took the chance the he might. i myself dont think he will ever be more than a 270. 20hr 75-80 rbi player
December 5, 200322 yr i myself dont think he will ever be more than a 270. 20hr 75-80 rbi player if he performs like that, his obp will be about .390 to .400...I'd take that from a player.
December 5, 200322 yr Im sure the Marlins scouting department was tapped beofre the trade and if they think he can take over 1st base i believe in them. Lets not remember that D. Lee is more known for his glove not bat. His career average is .260 which is not what you would expect from a top 1st baseman. Lee hits for power - so does Choi. Only place where Derrek Lee excels above Choi is his glove but Choi is no slouch in that area either. I think Choi can have a .250 25 hr, 70 rbi season which he was on pace for before that concussion in 2003. Have some confidence guys and remember that not all scouts are the best in evaluating talent as you can see by some clubs having good farm systems and others dont.
December 5, 200322 yr no dolfin fan u are wrong..dee lee was first known for his glove but has developed into a premier top 6 first baseman in the game...u cannot say all those things about choi when he hasnt proven it...just cuz he is in florida now doesnt mean u gotta put down lee and hype choi..hes nothing more than mediocre

C'mon!!!
December 5, 200322 yr Give Choi a chance. Last yr the kid didnt have a chance w/ Dusty at the helm. We cant expect the kid to kick butt the first yr - but i believe with time he will grow to something special. Remember D. Lees rookie year .233, 17 HR, 74 RBI. I was counting him out then but look at what type of player he's become. When i was comparing Lee to Choi i believe that are comparable in everything but glove but of coursr im talking potential wise. It wouldnt surprise me if Choi put up better numbers than Lee his rookie year.
