BeckettPierreFan21
Here's news on the trade (they said its a 3-way trade): 12/14/2003 NEW ORLEANS (CP) - The Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-way trade with Tampa Bay and Colorado at the winter meetings Sunday, acquiring Rockies reliever Justin Speier. The Blue Jays sent left-hander starter Mark Hendrickson to the Devil Rays and Tampa Bay sent left-hander starter Joe Kennedy to Colorado to complete the three-team deal. Speier was 3-1 with a 4.05 earned-run average in 72 relief appearances last season and had nine saves. He allowed 73 hits in 73 1/3 innings while striking out 66 batters against only 24 walks. Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi says the team is considering starting next season with Speier, Aquilino Lopez and Kerry Ligtenberg sharing the closer's duties. ``We feel we have three quality arms that can hopefully bridge the seven, eight, ninth (innings),'' Ricciardi said Sunday. ``We probably needed bullpen help more.'' Speier earned $850,000 US last season and will make about $1.6 million in 2004 after arbitration. Hendrickson was 9-9 with a 5.51 ERA in 30 starts for the Jays last season but 5-4 with a 4.16 ERA in 17 road starts. ``Away from SkyDome, he pitched very well,'' Devil Rays general manager Chuck LaMar said. ``It's a very tough place to pitch. We think he'll pitch better not only in our park but throughout 2004.'' Kennedy, who was the Rays' Opening Day starter, went 3-12 with a 6.32 ERA. He made 22 starts before finishing the season with 10 relief appearances. ``He struggled mightily as a starting pitcher for us last year,'' LaMar said. ``We had pencilled him in to pitch in the bullpen and we needed starting pitching.''
