It appears that both Merloni and Damian Jackson will be let go, which could leave room on the roster for one more reserve infielder. Redman was worth at least $3 million last season, but the A's didn't want to pay him that kind of money for 2004. Some team will probably give him $6 million over two years. SuperAngels
12/20/2003 4:41 PM ET Cubs non-tender Simon Team also expects to sign Barrett on Sunday By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs on Saturday did not tender a contract to first baseman Randall Simon and were expected to sign catcher Michael Barrett. Teams had until Saturday to decide whether to offer contracts to unsigned players on the 40-man roster. Any player not retained as a result of a non-tender will be granted free agency. The list of players the Cubs needed to act upon by Saturday's deadline included Barrett and Simon. On Friday, the Cubs took care of two others and signed catcher Paul Bako and infielder Ramon Martinez to one-year contracts. The Cubs were interested in keeping Simon, but he would've had to accept a part-time role because the team added first baseman Derrek Lee. Acquired in August from Pittsburgh, Simon was a solid in-season addition, batting .282 in 33 games. Thursday's signing of free agent Todd Hollandsworth gives the Cubs a left-handed batter who can play first. The Cubs can still negotiate with Simon but will be competing with the other Major League teams. Simon was believed to be interested in a full-time job. Sources said the Cubs were expected to complete a deal with Barrett on Sunday. Chicago acquired the catcher from Oakland for a player to be named later, and if Barrett is signed, catcher Damian Miller is expected to be sent to the Athletics to complete the transaction. Barrett batted .208 in 70 games of an injury-plagued 2003 season for Montreal, which dealt him to Oakland on Monday. Miller, 34, hit .233, including a .205 average in September. RippyO
Mark Redman non-tendered by the Athletics. Mark, we got an opening for you at the Cubs. Just let us get Damian Miller out of the way first.
Beinfest4Prez
Damian Moss - S - Baltimore Orioles Dec 20 Orioles non-tendered LHP Damian Moss. There should be several small-market teams interested in taking a chance on Moss. Our guess is that he'll land in Milwaukee.

Beinfest4Prez
Danys Baez - R - Cleveland Indians Dec 20 Indians non-tendered RHP Danys Baez. In a smart move, the Indians decided against going to war with the MLBPA over Baez. The 26-year-old reliever might be considered for the closer's role in Pittsburgh, but it's more likely that he'll sign with another team as a setup man. Carl Sadler - R - Cleveland Indians Dec 20 Indians non-tendered LHP Carl Sadler. The Indians went into last year thinking Sadler would be a fixture in their pen for several years, but he struggled in the majors (despite a 1.86 ERA in 9 2/3 innings) and at Triple-A Buffalo. He could be re-signed to a minor league deal, but the team isn't counting on him contributing next season.

SuperAngels
Jeromy Burnitz signed, then non-tendered by the Rockies? What the huh? Jeromy Burnitz must have been non-tendered by the Dodgers if anybody. But I think it is a error since Burnitz has 11 years of MLB service. farmer_fran
Red Sox non-tendered LHP Scott Sauerbeck. Sauerbeck was awful for the Red Sox, but he won't have any shortage of suitors now that he's a free agent. The Pirates would like to have him back, but Sauerbeck would probably prefer to sign with a team that wouldn't be looking to trade him in July c/o Rotoworld

Hugg
Russell Branyan me want... Yeah. We could use someone on our bench to come in late in games and rekindle the memories of DLee with strikeouts. Seriously, Branyan sucks. He's got tons of power, but he'll never hit more than .215. And he makes Jose Hernandez look like he's got great strkezone judgement.
