July 11, 20224 yr Okay, so anyone who has watched a Marlins game knows that Don Mattingly employs the shift incorrectly far more often than he does it right. His concept of shifting is based almost exclusively on the batter's handedness. That's it. Is a backup catcher likely to pull a ball against Sandy Alcantara who is throwing 100 mph? YES! According to Don's shifts. But then there's also this: is a guy who pulls the ball 26% of the time likely to pull the ball this time? YES! According to Don's shifts.
