Mike Williams signs with D-Rays

Featured Replies

Just saw it on the bottom-line for ESPN, he agreed to a minor league contract.

Cross off another name for the 'pen...

To a minor-league deal?

because he blows I have more confidence in him in the 7th/8th inning than Michael Tejera or Nate Bump...

IMO the D-Rays are getting better. He was horrible last season, but he is still the pitcher he has always been. If he can pitch like he did in 2002 it will be a great addition.

I think that the term "minor-league deal" is a bit of a misnomer. I think that for some reason, teams need to do that for financial\roster purposes. for example, i believe that the Padres technically signed David Wells to a "minor-league deal and invited him to Spring Training", but he obviously is getting paid a good amount and will definitely make the team. I think ths same is true for Williams.

I'm sure the contract includes a bump in salary if he makes it to the major league roster, and additional money for amount of games or innings pitched.

And if I remember correctly, Esteban Loiza was signed to a minor league contract on 2003?

There could be some real bargains out there, we just need to give a second chance to some people out there.

That's how minor league contracts work, it's not guaranteed money, but if you make the MLB roster, the player usually gets another $300-600k.

And David Wells signed a Major League deal with the Padres, the Yanks were offering a minor league deal with a weight clause.
