Question regarding Maddux

Featured Replies

My question is.....

Why do so many people around here want him so much?

He's going to cost you AT LEAST 2 years at 8 million per, he's getting very old, he's not nearly as good as he used to be, and you guys have great young pitching.

For the Marlins, a team with limited Payroll as it is, to make this much of a money committment on a pitcher in the twilight of his career makes no sense, especially when you have guys like Burnett, Beckett, Willis, Pavano, etc. makes no sense to me at all.

I understand you think it would be cool to see him win no. 300 in teal, but that shouldn't factor in to your opinion on signing Maddux.

All responses are appreciated, because I want to hear some feedback on this.

Stadium?

A PR Boost and teaching the staff is not worth the money Maddux wants.

I guess the stadium point makes some sense, but I don't know much about that situation.

I think he's far from washed up, teams can never have too much starting pitching and he'd be a great guy to have around to mentor some of the younger guys, especially Penny whose as thick as a brick when it comes to pitching (versus throwing).

I happen to agree the price is steep but in the end I'm willing, heck I'm more than willing, I want to see him round out this staff and it makes waiting for AJ easier.

You're right though, financially its a tough nut, but at the same time if he performs well in the first half of the season it makes a Pavano (just using a name) available to make a big trade at mid-season. One my concerns is that this team is thin on tradeable talent (every guy has to perform because we have no bench and a less than ideal relief corps) so when the trading deadline comes we need to be able to trade a guy to bring in someone to fill some (potential) need or we are scr*wed.

And if someone in the staff struggles they would be able to take some time in the pen to shape it up before returning to their role as starter.

The experience he brings to the staff is most important, but the man is still a great starter, and would dominate at PPS.

I remember when he was having problems early last year everyone said he was washed up, "the end of the Braves dynasty", and so on... so what happened? I would not like to see him on our team, but rather a division opponent so we can continue beating up on him.

And he turned his season around and had a stellar second half.

I agree with Ramp, 15 wins with the Fish. The question is how much can the FO afford to pay for those wins.

For a one year deal, yes. 2 years, No thanks.

We will need that money to lock our young pitching long term. Unless, Loria has a LOT of special money.

Remember though, that Braves offense was scary good last year. I'm not doubting Maddux, but I think he may have been even worse had it not been for the stellar offense behind him last year...

He had a good ERA.....your team's offensive abilities do not affect the pitcher's ERA.

That does make sense. If we're to get Maddux, make it one year.
