Celebrate 2 great Southern men

Robert E. Lee ended the Civil War, which took alot of guts there. Martin Luther King, Jr. got the wheels moving on change, unfortunately some of these so called "Civil Rights Leader" have hijacked his vision.

rommel was a pretty decent guy who was playing on the wrong team, should we honor him next to heros like Gahndi, MLK, and patton?

honor hitler while ur at it

robert e lee and mlk should never be mentioned in the same sentence

Agreed Cape, MLK is somewhat like Marx in a sense that his vision is being wrongly by Sharpton to mislead his own people in believing that the world is out to get them.

Talk to any successful man of color and I guarantee you, very few listen to Sharpton because that is not how change occurs. Change occurs through work and growing tolerant of the surroundings around you and accepting failure.

Sharpton has made a joke out of himself so many times defending liars who accused White's of doing horrible things(mainly the one black girl who claimed a group of white men raped her and she admitted it was all a lie).

I salute MLK and I am glad that your vision is being realized slowly through individual hard work not by "The Civil Rights leaders"

Robert E. Lee was a great general, and an honorable man, who advocated the immediate emancipation of all slaves. If fighting for your state over fighting for your country means you are on the wrong side, then yes he fought for the wrong side.

and MLK, although having his own lesser-known problems, was a leader in one of the great causes of U.S. history, and the country is a better country today because of work he did.

Lee in a letter to his sister, April 20, 1861

Ah yes, If I remember correctly that one of the key parts of The Gods and Generals Movie...

it is.....the movie was actually kinda boring, but still good.

Yes, it dragged on but was still a movie I loved watching with my dad...

I kinda felt their was to much emphasis on god in that movie, I realize Stonewall was a relegious man but they kinda just kept on pushing it on you.

I wonder if TNT will show Gettysburg during Superbowl Sunday, again this year?

If fighting for Prussia over your country helps perpertuate the holocaust, you are fighting for the wrong side.

Robert E Lee's belief in emancipation wasn't strong enough to take up arms against such a heinous practice, so don't give me that confederate loving bull.

"Talk to any successful man of color..."

What? Man of color? You might as well call a black person a negro.

I respect rommel as a general like Hans Guderian (another genius german commander) and Kesselrine (sp?) However, respecting their military genius does not make them heros.

That's why Lee is not a "great man", "American hero" or anything else. He was a great general that fought for an evil country whose main purpose was to perpetuate slavery or at the very least perpetuate their way of life, which includes slavery.

However, I think Lee might be a tad overrated like Rommel. Lee faced HUGE casualties every time he went on an offensive. When it comes to Rommel, his failed attempt in Africa was due to his ambitiousness. He should of known he would of been spread to thin if malta would never fall. But he was allowed to press on and he was repulsed at el alamein. Now, whether him not withdrawing allowing the british to destroy his army was as much his fault as was Hitler's for making the order to stand fast is debatable, but if one is a good strategist like rommel was supposed to be, you would withdraw away from impending doom. I believe pro-rommel historians want to attribute rommel's failures to hitler and his successes to himself. That's bull. sorry, went off topic.

What? Man of color? You might as well call a black person a negro. what? Your saying it was wrong for him to say "man of color"? In the 1860s, it was like calling someone black now. That's what blacks called themselves, its what whites called em.

lol

What does NAACP stand for, btw?

Rune said "people of color" I am correcting him.

Blacks used to call themselves negro, but was it right? no, do you call black people negros?

Furman "people of color" is this new neo-leftist term to bunch all blacks and latinos together into one group. However, defining a socioeconomic status by skin color is stupid in my opinion. I'm against giving everyone long labels that are racist.

Whites aren't caucasian. We are white. Blacks aren't african american any more than whites are european american. blacks are not colored any more than whites are not colored. I have had it with the hypocrisy (sp) and prejudice. It has to stop.

What does NAACP stand for, btw?

How about the untied negro college fund? they're antiquated terms, duh.

Furthermore, you seem to be unable to disprove my point that discredits your buddy robert.

As far as Lee's strategy in the Civil War goes, he was just attempting to land a knockout blow on Northern soil because he knew the South couldn't win a long war. That is why he took a lot of casualties.

I don't respect Rommel. He's done nothing for me.

I'm celebrating Robert E. Lee because he has done so much for his state, for the South. I don't expect a Yankee as yourself to respect him, and I'm not trying to make you respect him.

But there are plenty of people on this board that are from the South, and that was the point of this post. Hell, look at the title of this thread...2 great SOUTHERN men.

In my honest opinion, Lee's later defensive strategies in 64-65 is what made him remembered. he should of been way more defensive and the north might of decided to give out, who knows. One thing I do know is Lee would of been more successful.

I don't respect Rommel. He's done nothing for me.

Lee DID NOTHING FOR AMERICA.

He did nothing for you but prolong a war. thankfully, the north won and america is a better place because of it.

Yeah, but Lee was a great general, but he didn't help america or the world like king, which sets them apart, so don't compare them.

Robert E. Lee did more than just prolong the war. He gave the South a source of pride. Southerners today are still proud of him. Schools are named after him, he helped build a college, and he has memorials and monuments all around the South built remembering him. But Sorianofan knows better, and all the people that gave money, supported, or built those memorials are just ignorant Southern bigots who wish the South would have won, so we could still have slaves.

I respect Lee a lot because of what he stood for. He made the tough decision of fighting for his state or for his country. In the end, he decided to protect his people, his family, his friends, and his property, instead of fighting for a country, that at the time seemed to have a different agenda.

So, you can compare Rommel to Lee or what have you, but Rommel doesn't hold a candle to Lee in my eyes, and many Southerners' eyes. So, you can celebrate MLK (who btw was a communist). I will celebrate Lee AND MLK. Both are very respectable men, and I am glad both of them did what they did. I am also proud that 2 such men were both from the South.

why are we talking about lee on mlk day?

the man represented the confederacy and did so little to better america

how bout some praise for mlk

You are a bigot, because you are not assessing what existed within the states at that point, and being a bigot makes you ignorant. Source of pride, my dick is a source of pride. Is my dick an american hero? How about patton? I don't see southerners excaliming about his accomplishments for America. Robert E Lee shouldn't give you pride. he blundered in antietam and gettysburg, he fought for a poor cause, he helped prolong slavery. he sounds more like a douche bag than a hero. I don't like speaking in this tone, but don't ever compare a man of peace that helped America with a man of war that helped hurt it. I love america and I hate america's enemies.

He stood for putting his family above his country, his estate over what was right, his pride over what is moral. I don't see any of those things as admirable. Supporting succession hurt this country and would hurt us all.

Rommel protected his country, family, and all that other good crap that makes him "a hero." At least he tried to kill hitler, lee never went after jefferson davis. Lee is not a respectable man for what he did, just strictly because of his skills as a general.

Martin luther king (like gahndi) being a commie has nothing to do with their accomplishments...
