signing pitchers long term when they are arbitration eligible is economic suicide for a team like the Marlins. Marlins have Penny under control this year and next. Next year, Beckett becomes arb eligible and Burnett is fifth year arb. Since all the position players are under club control for next year, the Marlins are in great shape for the future. They can see how Pav performs this year, and then try to go long term at a reasonable price. If he commands too much, they will let him go and fill in another fifth starter. For the next two seasons, the Marlins have a rotation of Beckett, Penny, AJ, D Train. Not too shabby. Plus, fans seem to forget that Alex has signed for two years. That means, Alex, Luis, Mikey, JP, Conine are signed through 2005. Don't bother telling me that Mikey hinges on the stadium. That will get done. If it's not done, then the team should move. But it will get done by March 15. Choi and Miggie will be under club control not yet arb eligible. So team would be better positioned to sign some pitchers longer term at that point.
