January 20, 200422 yr Great for team morale to avoid arbitration. Hats off to front office to avoid arbitration hearings completely. Now everyone goes into the spring focused on winning the division. When AJ joins the rotation likely by May 1 the rotation will be as strong as anyone in baseball. Penny and Pav have chance to outstanding seasons.

I'm generally not adverse to one year deals but these guys are going to cost a fortune next season, espeically Pavano. Even if they wanted use one of them as tradebait at a later date, a multi-year deal would have enhanced their chances of getting quality in return. I'm the last one to second-guess the FO, but I just don't get it.

Besides from some things I'm starting to research long term deals for pitchers is not something a club of our economics wants to do. Position players are the types we need to sign long term. Pitchers in general are too prone to injury and fluctuation in performance relative to position players.

Yeah I know at least Burnett and Penny arent free agents but they are arbration eligible next year and if they have big years they will cost a lot more.
January 21, 200422 yr I'm a bit surprised they received as much as they did. But if they continue to pitch like they did at the end of last season it will be well worth it. A 1 yr deal will be a great motivator to continue to raise the performance bar.

Wow that's a little high. Great deals for Penny and Pavano. I figured they'd get a little over 3 million each, but at the salary they're getting now, you'd think the Marlins could just make them multi-year offers if they wanted. I mean why not make a 3 year 9 million offer? You can always still trade them down the road if needed... I suppose Pavano and Penny still haven't had top-notch seasons yet & maybe you don't want to go overboard, but that's a lot of money for 1-year deals. My thinking is the team hopes AJ makes a full recovery & Dontrelle has another good year, so in a couple of years they can concentrate on AJ, Josh, DTrain, and maybe a Jeff Allison or something...
January 21, 200422 yr pavano: 5.51 ERA outside of pro player stadium penny: 4.62 ERA outside of pro player stadium that's what i call overrated. i like penny and pav's as much as the next guy, but these guys aren't nearly good enough to be making close to $4 million each.

Bottom line is that these guys performed and gave 100% during the playoffs and WS. That is worth 500K, in my book. If things don't work out with Pavz or Pennu, these are only one year contracts.

This may go a long way towards goodwill for next season when Pavs is a FA. Penny, I believe, we still will retain the rights to. I think we did pay a lot, but these guys will be worth it this season and are crucial for our teams success. Arbitration could get ugly, glad we avoided it.
