February 13, 200422 yr Author I've tried to quit three times. I can't seem too though. Does anyone know any good methods? Cold turkey doesn't seem to work, and I'm told that it is actually unhealthy. drugs, nicorette, patches...give them a shot.
February 14, 200422 yr that said, if you are getting emotional and physical benefit out of smoking, i'm not going to tell you not to smoke.? you have every right to continue smoking if you do so because you enjoy it.... but if the only reason you continue smoking is because you don't believe the scientific link between smoking and those major health conditions, let me assure you that the link between smoking and all sorts of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes is indisputable. Bingo. I'm not dumb, I know the risks. I also believe that smoking helps me think, and write, and for me, it works. I also know that I take every effort to ensure that my smoke does not affect anyone - when outdoors, I always stay away from entrances, and I never light up in a restaurant even if I'm allowed to. I will agree with you on the medical stuff, because you have the experience and your attitude is total conviction. My problem is with the people like FutureGM, who equate smoking with terrorism. The rhetoric has gotten to the point where smokers are deemed to be on a level similar to Nazis and child molesters. The "rationale" for this is that second-hand smoke kills whatever number of non-smokers per year. Could you please tell me how THOSE tests come about? To RealFlava - yeah the smell is worst part for me.
February 14, 200422 yr My parents, my aunts, my uncles, my cousins, etc have been smokers for a long time. Nevertheless, I feel physically ill by smoke, the sight of cigarrettes, matches and everything that has to do with the habit of smoking. I guess that I was deeply affected by all the smoking people around me, but I really can not stand it, it makes me want to puke. When there are people smoking around me, I have to leave. Smoke not only makes me nauseous, but triggers my asthma. I think is rude of smokers to impose their habit on others. If you are going to smoke yourself to death, fine. Just have the decency of not killing me too in your suicide attempt.

February 14, 200422 yr my Dad smokes, my Mom used to. i don't smoke, though i have tried it, and was greatly dissapointed. my logic was 'for people to try this, it's got to do something.' it didn't do anything that controlled breathing won't already do. my question is, what first possessed humanity to take a plant, set it on fire, and put it in their mouth?
February 14, 200422 yr my question is, what first possessed humanity to take a plant, set it on fire, and put it in their mouth? i'm sure that man at many times during history has set plants/trees/foliage on fire, either intentionally or accidentally. if that burning plant happens to smell nice or make you feel good, you'd want to burn it again and smell it close up. i'm thinkin at some point they'd put a few leaves of that nice plant in a pipe :hat so they can inhale the fumes better. whoever decided to roll up that leaf and wrap it in slow-burning paper was pretty damn clever. i happen to like the smell of burning plants. then again, i like the smell of a lot of crap. if i were a caveman, i could totally see myself inhaling random fumes for fun.
February 14, 200422 yr I've tried to quit three times. I can't seem too though. Does anyone know any good methods? read this: http://www.lungusa.org/partner/quit/index.html it's some really good advice on how to quit. the "medications" chart is good, too, in case you're wondering what nicotine-replacement aids you should use to quit. both the patch and the gum are over the counter and can be pretty effective. if you're serious about it, you could just talk to your doctor and he/she should be able to hook you up with a prescription for something good. Cold turkey doesn't seem to work, and I'm told that it is actually unhealthy. it's very tough to do, but i've never heard of it being unhealthy. you might get withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, and anxiety for awhile, but i don't think it's anything dangerous. read the stuff on that page and give it a shot with one of those quitting aids.
