February 25, 200422 yr CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Turns out Billy Wagner's left index finger will be all right -- in about a week. The prized offseason acquisition left camp early on Tuesday to have an MRI performed on the finger. Results showed inflammation, but no tendon, ligament or joint damage. "I don't know what caused it," said Wagner. "I'm in no hurry, so let's just take care of this." Wagner experienced discomfort after tossing 38 scorching fastballs in a throwing session. The MRI was performed in the afternoon, and the results will be sent to team doctor Michael Ciccotti. "With the money some people are making, we're just being safe," said manager Admin Bowa. "We're doing what we're supposed to do." Pitching coach Joe Kerrigan was pleased with the throwing session, during which catcher A.J. Hinch was often seen shaking his glove hand. "Having just spoken to [Wagner], he had [the discomfort] a little bit before he came into camp," said Kerrigan. "He was done [for the day] anyway. He threw 38 very impressive pitches. It is a lot of fun to watch him throw on the side." Riding to have the MRI, Wager naturally was worried. "I didn't feel good at all when I threw, so we thought we had it looked at. Any time something goes on with the tools of your craft (you're concerned). That's why I wanted to have it looked at now. "This is good timing." A loss of Wagner would thrust Tim Worrell into the closer's role, a role he handled last season for San Francisco in Robb Nen's absence. As it turns out, it's only a week, meaning the flame-throwing lefty could pitch in the Spring Training opener on March 4.
February 25, 200422 yr Our chances are slim? That is if the Phillies batters don't decide to have Pat Burrell (No bash to him, I've loved him since he was at UM) Round 2. That team is also having to deal with the second craziest manager in the NL East, maybe the league. The pressure will be so much on the team from Philly itself. This is there best team in over ten years!

February 25, 200422 yr If Wagner doesn't go down, who will they blame when they fall on their faces again this year? Their bullpen was horrible last year, but there wouldn't have been as many one-run games if their batters weren't striking out all the time or their starting pitchers did better to start out the game.
