March 9, 200422 yr The most compelling reason for Nunez winning a starting role (if in fact he can prove himself in ST) is if Lowell is injured and Cabs moves to third, filling in for Mikey. The Fish are going to give Big Choi every chance to succeed, not just during ST but at least for a few months into the season. And this idea of moving Pierre to LF is sheer lunacy. No one is going to displace JP in centerfield, not after his contribution last season. Trader Jack is nothing if not loyal. If (a big "if") Nunez forces his way into the starting lineup it will be at one of the corner OF positions, not in CF. I agree with this. I even think that Lowell could start the season injured - as a precaution. But you know what? The fact we are debating about who should start is a good thing because it shows the depth of the talent pool here. Choi, Conine, Cordero, Cabs, Lowell, and Nunez - all should be on this team. With those players, you have a lot of flexibility and upside. Choi IS going to be our 1B. I think he deserves every chance - if the organization is truthful about developing him. And I think they are. Nunez has great upside and this 'age' factor is just ridiculous. Age aint nothin but a number - the guy can play, let him go. Forget age. Age aint holding Conine back...
March 9, 200422 yr Oh, and dont get so caught up in stats, fellas. It is about who looks ready to go. Who looks composed and who is ready to make a contribution - every day. It is about getting players who can get it done. Whatever Nunez does now, it is still only spring training. He should make the team, but he will have to keep it going to actually get a chance to start. I dont see that happening right now anyway unless there is a significant injury.
March 10, 200422 yr First they wanted to get rid of Luis Castillo to allow Derrek Lee to stay Then they wanted to trade Mike Lowell to allow Lee to stay Then they wanted to sign Rafael Palmeiro to a contract equalling what our entire outfield makes a year Now they want to hand the starting job to a player after a week? McKeon has a whole month to decide, and can tweak the lineup all year if he wants. In McKeon We Trust... to win it all again.
