Lowell out 5-7 days

Featured Replies

Bad news, because Mike has had a little pain in his elbow ever since last year and it still hasn't gone away.

Lowell to rest 5-7 days

JUPITER, Fla. -- Marlins All-Star third baseman Mike Lowell will rest five to seven days after results of an MRI showed inflammation in his right elbow.

Lowell, who has been playing with pain, has had the elbow ailment since the playoffs. He was hopeful the pain would subside in the offseason, but it returned early in Spring Training. The elbow troubles him mostly when throwing, but not hitting.

On Monday, Lowell started at third base in the Marlins' Grapefruit League game with the Expos at Roger Dean Stadium. He walked and singled before leaving the game. Later in the afternoon, Lowell underwent an MRI.

Lowell is projected to hit cleanup for the defending World Series champion Marlins.

The 30-year-old has been an All-Star reserve the past two seasons. This spring, he is 3-for-7 (.429) in limited opportunities.

A year ago, Lowell missed a couple of weeks of Spring Training due to a lower back problem. He was still ready for Opening Day, and expects to be so again this year.

In 2003, Lowell had personal highs in home runs (32) and RBIs (105).

I think this is good for Nunez, and a naggin problem for Lowell. It seems Lowell will more than likely start the season on the DL, just as a precaution. Dont rush it Mikey, take your time and do it right. It is a long season and we need you.

Cabrera has been getting plenty of practice at 3rd since the start of ST. He has actually started more at 3rd (twice) than RF (once). He'll be ready to step in again if Mike goes on the DL.

i dont like this...

its thes little nagging injuries in the spring that if left alone become big problems

opening day well see cabrera at 3rd, cordero or maybe even nunez in right

This troubles me. Cabrera is a real asset now, and I think that if this needs to be corrected surgically, it should. I'd rather have Lowell miss the first month and a half of the season than worry about him breaking down come July. It'll be easier to replace an OF spot than a 3B spot, so thank God for Cabrera...

Its better to have him out right now than in the regular season.

Lowell better be healthy for the season, we need him so be succesful.

The good news is that news reports do not mention or bone spur or a deposit that would require surgery.

yeah, but it also says that so far all he's done is try to rest it. He's had 4.5 months off, you think he'd get a little more aggressive trying to diagnose it at this point...

After the entire offseason its not gone....

This seems serious

Nailed it

This looks bad......

this sounds extremely serious. dammit i cant stand another marlins player to have tommy john surgery. that would mean no mike lowell for 12-18 months. hopefully that isnt the case

position players rarely, if ever, have T.J. surgery.

Here's what the PB Post had to say about it, from today's edition:

Lowell (elbow) expected to miss 5-7 days

By Joe Capozzi and Tom D'Angelo, Palm Beach Post Staff Writers

Wednesday, March 10, 2004

PORT ST. LUCIE -- All-Star third baseman Mike Lowell will be out of action for five to seven days because of lingering soreness in his right elbow.

The Marlins don't expect the soreness to cause Lowell to miss opening day on April 6. An MRI taken Monday at Jupiter Medical Center revealed only swelling and no structural damage.

"I'm concerned because I want the pain to go away but the MRI was good, nothing structural,'' said Lowell, who was 3-for-7 in four Grapefruit League games despite feeling the pain since last week.

"No one sounds concerned about missing time or opening day. If I had to play through, I think I could. It would just be uncomfortable, but six days and possibly pain free for the year, it's a pretty good bargain.''

Lowell will not accompany the Marlins this weekend to Mexico City. Manager Jack McKeon plans to play Lowell every other day when he returns.

Last spring, Lowell was out March 7-22 because of lower back stiffness. He went on to post career-highs in home runs (32) and RBI (105) and made the All-Star team, but not without pain.

He began experiencing soreness in the elbow in July. The pain became more intense through the Marlins' post-season run. He missed most of September with a broken hand.

Lowell said he is taking anti-inflammatory medicine that works best with no physical activity. "I'll take it for the next six days. I'll be working on stretching and doing some running and conditioning, but they don't want me to hit or throw,'' he said.

"They really believe in the next six days it could all be gone. It's just a swelling... but that inflammation, and when you lock out your arm, it puts pressure on a nerve and that's what I feel.''

I hope it's just swelling Mike, we need you...
