Jeff Conine, nicknamed Mr. Marlin, has accepted a standing offer from the club to become a special assistant. The meetings in Las Vegas are his first official duties with the team. Conine's role will be similar to special assistants Andre Dawson and Tony Perez. He expects to be at Spring Training with Florida in some capacity. An original Marlin, Conine retired after the 2007 season. Prior to 2008, Conine signed a one-day contract with Florida and retired. The 42-year-old enjoyed two stints with the organization -- 1993-97 and 2003-05. Conine broke in with the Royals in 1990, and he is a career .285 hitter. In 1995, he was the Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game, belting the game-winning home run for the National League. Conine was a key contributor on the Marlins' 1997 and 2003 World Series championship teams. In October, Conine became the first big league player to participate and complete the Ford Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Congrats to Mr. Marlin. About time.

Agree, not sure why everyone is clawing for Dallas to be a starter next year. Let him show he's healthy and productive for more than a season.

The Marlins are expected to move their Triple A affiliate from Albuquerque (N.M.) to in New Orleans next season. According to industry sources, and a Marlin source, the team will replace the Mets affiliate in New Orleans. The Mets are moving to Buffalo. The Dodgers are moving their Triple A team from Las Vegas to Albuquerque, and there was speculation the Marlins might leave Albuquerque and move to Las Vegas. They needed to create a spot on the 40 man roster, so sending down anyone wasn't an option. Unless they moved someone to the 60 day again. I'd imagine that he gets picked up by someone, and probably part of the thought process on this one was that it's one less arm they have to pay next year through arbitration.

I know I don't really post, but did anyone else just catch that? Straub, who owns the Miami arena put in a permit to demolish the arena, and wants to build and finance a new marlins stadium on the site.

This was a very difficult decision but one that had to be made. I sincerely hope the fans of South Florida know how lucky they are to have the Marlins, and I hope they will support the 2007 team. Doesn't say much as far as reasons, but I'd have to agree that he's retiring to be with his wife and family.
