Conine weighing front-office position
http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla LAS VEGAS -- One of the most popular Marlins ever is part of the organization's contingent at the Winter Meetings. Jeff Conine, nicknamed Mr. Marlin, has accepted a standing offer from the club to become a special assistant. The meetings in Las Vegas are his first official duties with the team. Conine's role will be similar to special assistants Andre Dawson and Tony Perez. He expects to be at Spring Training with Florida in some capacity. An original Marlin, Conine retired after the 2007 season. Prior to 2008, Conine signed a one-day contract with Florida and retired. The 42-year-old enjoyed two stints with the organization -- 1993-97 and 2003-05. Conine broke in with the Royals in 1990, and he is a career .285 hitter. In 1995, he was the Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game, belting the game-winning home run for the National League. Conine was a key contributor on the Marlins' 1997 and 2003 World Series championship teams. In October, Conine became the first big league player to participate and complete the Ford Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Congrats to Mr. Marlin. About time.

Wes Helms Signs 2 Year Deal
Agree, not sure why everyone is clawing for Dallas to be a starter next year. Let him show he's healthy and productive for more than a season.

Out of Albuquerque - AAA Now in New Orleans
The Marlins are expected to move their Triple A affiliate from Albuquerque (N.M.) to in New Orleans next season. According to industry sources, and a Marlin source, the team will replace the Mets affiliate in New Orleans. The Mets are moving to Buffalo. The Dodgers are moving their Triple A team from Las Vegas to Albuquerque, and there was speculation the Marlins might leave Albuquerque and move to Las Vegas. The New Orleans location will make it easier to move players to and from their Triple A club. http://miamiherald.typepad.com/fish_bytes/...e-a-team-m.html Much shorter flight, a BIT more humid.

Out of Albuquerque - AAA Now in New Orleans
I assumed we still had a multi-year deal with the Isotopes, but the article says we haven't renewed yet, neither have the Nationals or Dodgers. Although it does bash us a little bit too. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/sep/0...-month-orphans/

Miller DFA, LoDuca Up
They needed to create a spot on the 40 man roster, so sending down anyone wasn't an option. Unless they moved someone to the 60 day again. I'd imagine that he gets picked up by someone, and probably part of the thought process on this one was that it's one less arm they have to pay next year through arbitration.

Miami Arena?
I know I don't really post, but did anyone else just catch that? Straub, who owns the Miami arena put in a permit to demolish the arena, and wants to build and finance a new marlins stadium on the site.

Coach Perry Hill Retires
http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/press_...sp&c_id=fla The following is a statement from Perry Hill regarding the announcement of his retirement: I would like to thank Jeffrey Loria, David Samson, Admin Beinfest, Mike Hill, Dan Jennings and Jim Fleming for their unwavering support over the years. The confidence that was showed in me by Jeff Torborg, Jack McKeon, Joe Girardi and Fredi Gonzalez was greatly appreciated. My respect and love goes out to all of the players I had the privilege to work with over the years. Each one touched my heart in a special way. I would like to thank Matt Roebuck and his staff and the broadcast and print media for always being nothing but fair, and I will miss my daily interactions with each one. This was a very difficult decision but one that had to be made. I sincerely hope the fans of South Florida know how lucky they are to have the Marlins, and I hope they will support the 2007 team. Doesn't say much as far as reasons, but I'd have to agree that he's retiring to be with his wife and family.

D'Train signs one year contract
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2732239 Dontrelle Willis reached agreement Monday on a one-year, guaranteed $6.45 million contract with the Florida Marlins, a day before he was scheduled to exchange salary arbitration figures with the club. Willis' deal includes $50,000 in incentives, a "sizable" advance on his salary, and bonuses if he makes the All-Star team or wins the Cy Young Award, Silver Slugger or National League Most Valuable Player Award, according to his agent, Matt Sosnick. JOY (edit) And sorry guess that shouldn't say 'extention', but just a one year contract for this year. Oh well. :dork
