The hope would be that he can get on base a bit more than he did in the major leagues, which I think will happen. Sometimes it doesn't happen immediately, let him adjust, give him a little time. I think the average and OBP can creep up. I don't see how a .780 OPS is a stretch for him, I think he can def slug .450 and post an OBP of .330. That might be optimistic, but that's because I liked what I saw. Based on what? You always say these things but you never have anything to support it. It's just "hope" and wishful thinking. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=dietri002der Every single time you and I get into an argument I have stats to support my opinion. You simply choose to ignore whatever stats support my argument. Literally, everytime. He has actually been a model of consistency since being drafted, and he has ALWAYS been a bat-first prospect. In 1,556 MiLB plate appearances: .277/.348./476/.824. And his best season was this year, not a distant memory. The encouraging part about his season was how he killed in in Jax, came up and did well, got into a slump, went back to Jax and killed it again. He ended up with almost a .900 OPS in Double-A this year and between the majors/minors hit 20 homers in less than 500 PA. I don't know why this is news to you, he was supposed to be a good hitter.

Rule 5 Draft 2013
Carlos Perez sounds like a likely fit. Still only 23-years-old, so he's actually younger than Brantly. So few catching options on the market, why not?

If its already down to Betancourt levels than I'm not so sure we even find a third baseman. Its gonna be like last year where we go into Spring Training still not having one, crossing our fingers we get one, and then ultimately getting nothing. Like I said in the other thread, if they don't make any deals, I bet it ends up being Coghlan.

Petersen won't get a major league contact from anyone but he theoretically could break camp with a team if he had a great Spring. Still in all likelihood, he's headed to AAA somewhere and it's very unlikely that it's in New Orleans. You're absolutely right, he won't get a ML contract. But I think he'll sign a minor league deal and depending on where he ends up he could break camp in the majors. I actually think he could be a really good player in the right ballpark, and would be a solid find for whoever gives him a shot. I hate losing useful players for nothing. Or Coghlan. IMO, a better "compliment" to Ruggiano than Petersen. The way this off season is going, Coghlan will be our starting third baseman. I hope he is our 3B next year considering that we're interested in Yuniesky fucking Betancourt instead. I would take Coghs over many of the options being discussed. I'd still prefer a Trumbo/Middlebrooks/etc but he wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for a stop gap.

Petersen may not be in the organization next year. He's a minor league FA and seemed thrilled to be one. I bet, he could never stay up on the big league team. We'll see what happens... I do hope he stays, but if he can get a job somewhere else more power to him. I guess Smolinski would be his triple-A replacement.Smolinski may not be a Marlin anymore He is a F/A as well. I think Peterson has a better chance being resigned than Smolinski does... he has been a huge disappointment throughout his tenure in the Marlin's organization That's actually exactly why I think Peterson leaves and Smolinski is still here. Petey could probably get a job in the majors, Smolinski probably doesn't have a ton of teams calling him...

He has above average power for a second baseman but very little else. The walk rate in AA this season is likely an anomaly if you consider his career numbers. He didn't walk for shit in his stretch in MLB this past season, either. I don't see much to get excited about. His walk rate in his minor league career was 7%. Take away his year this season, and it's at 6.2 % League average for a second baseman. last season was about 7.3%. He didn't do well this season as a rookie but he can hover around 7% as a player. He'll strike out a lot but his power is a big deal and makes up for that. He ranked third out of 49 second baseman with at least 230 PAs last season in ISO. That's better than above average. There's also the fact that he produced very well in the minor leagues. He's had the time he needed. And as I've mentioned before, Perry Hill loves him at second base. I didn't see anything to be upset about defensively, I don't know why people seem to think he's bad over there. Dietrich has a ton of power, should be a 20+ homer guy over 600 plate appearances even at Marlins Park. I could see Navarro and Dietrich hitting at that level but I think it's a little high for Ozuna. It would be hard for him to hit at that level with no time in Double A. I think Ozuna can absolutely post a .750 OPS next season. His problem seemed to be discipline as the season went on, so I don't see him having a very high OBP. HOWEVER, one thing that was absent from his bat in the majors was that big power he has, and that is going to come eventually... You don't hit 20+ homers every year for 3 years in the minors and then hit 5 in the majors. Power generally translates from the minors to the majors, it's the other areas you usually worry about. Just wait and it will come.

There is no hope. Chris Young just signed with the Mets for 7.25 million. He hit .200 with a .280 OBP. Good, I'm glad... haha

Dumb question but can Moran start 3rd opening day next year, why or why not? And I don't care so much about experience per say, is it possible? Anything is possible, but I'd prefer he start in Jupiter. He slashed .299/.354/.442/.796 in Greensboro, and then seemed to struggle to find his way during the Arizona Fall League at bats. His slasher there was .230/.323/.264/.588, only three extra-base hits (all doubles) ... he did drive in 10 and draw 12 walks, though, so there's SOME positive. I'm sure he'll be working out a ton in the offseason to get to form. Sign another guy for one year to play third, like a Youkilis or something, or trade for one. Yea, anything's possible but CoMo probably needs a full year in single/double A. Maybe a September call up if he has a very good year.

No, Silverio will most likely be at New Orleans after getting a bit of a tryout in ST Who said this, and when? I don't think anybody did, but it's a pretty damn good guess. Our triple-A outfield looks like Jensen/Peterson/Silverio unless any of the three make the major league roster. I'm still hoping Peterson makes the team out of spring this year, I think he would be a nice complement to Ruggiano.

Speaking of rule 5 draftees, any news on Alfredo Silverio? Did we have to return him, is he in our system at all, what? I'm pretty sure we don't have to return him because he was on the major league DL all season.

Also by not being added to the 40-man, Jax Suns infielders Danny Black and Mark Canha are now candidates for Rule V draft. No MLB team is going to carry those guys on their 25 man roster.

You are acting like there is more of a possibility of the pieces falling together than there really is. I'm curious to know what kinds of OPS numbers you think guys like Ozuna, Dietrich, Navarro, and Hechavarria would be putting up. .750 .780 .730 .620

I almost wish we don't do a single thing this offseason and try again next offseason. All of these proposals are scaring the shit out of me... I would actually be fine with them really doing nothing drastic outside of extending Stanton. I don't think the Marlins are in a position to compete next season no matter what, so I would prefer they keep all of the young arms to see how they perform. If the pitching staff replicated last seasons performance, they could absolutely compete. Even just a league average offense would easily put this team in contention with the kind of pitching they got.

2013/14 offseason signings/trades
Wow, that's a big deal for both teams for all the reasons mentioned. Tigers shift into a perfect world, now they can get Castellanos in the lineup, Move Miggy to first, get a productive Kinsler, etc. Rangers have been looking for this kind of bat for a long time, they even tried to sign Prince themselves... They finally get the bat they covet, they get Profar at second base, and a discount on Prince's contract. That's two very good GM's at work right there...

Disasters can happen to otherwise playoff contending teams, sure, but you are assuming that an obscene number of pieces fall into place for the line-up listed above to be decent. Again, I don't disagree with that, either. There would be a huge margin for performance with that lineup... They could bomb, they could excel, or they could fall somewhere in between. Usually the latter is what to expect... that would probably be a lineup that would help us improve to be a .500 team. I'll take that coming off a 100 loss season, honestly.

Hank Conger, and Chris Iannetta being dicussed now.....we are all over the place....any thoughts? Did someone lock Jennings in a room with Dipoto? There are 28 other teams. This. I'm not opposed to a deal with the Angels and I see how we seem like a good match with them but at this point its like all we hear about is Marlins and Angels so I'm getting somewhat anxious to end it already, for better or worse. Either we make a deal with them now or move on, now. I know that's not how it works but its how I feel everytime I hear us connected to them. Do it or don't and hurry up. Maybe it's taking a while because they have so much to talk about. If both sides have interest in a lot of players, there's probably a lot of addition and subtraction being discussed. I know its not the same but that scarily reminds me of how the Blue Jays asking about JJ turned into a 12 player "blockbuster." The Blue Jays deal seems to have heavily favored the Marlins if you haven't noticed...
-
A. J. Pierzynski
Yeah but he may get paid as if he'd be duplicating it. Doesn't seem to be the case. ESPN is saying he could be had for a "Soto-like deal" which would be extremely reasonable. If he were getting paid to replicate last season he would get a Ruiz-type deal and that's obviously not happening.
-
A. J. Pierzynski
I question if Navarro can duplicate his 2013 season. He doesn't have to duplicate last year to have an impact on our lineup behind the plate... He could drop .100 points from his OPS and he would be a major upgrade.

2013/14 offseason signings/trades
Gets to be closer to home. Very surprised he got 8 million after the year he had. But as of right now, the Blue Jays got Reyes and Mark Buehrle for 18 million this year and 19 million next year. According to ESPN other teams made him better offers, he went with the Padres to be close to home. Interesting. Totally worth it for San Diego in my opinion. If he's healthy, he could have a great year pitching at Petco and in a weak division.

Or that people set their expectations for certain players irrationally high, as you tend to do. I don't have irrational expectations for anybody. I don't predict Stanton to hit 60 home runs and I haven't said Yelich is willing any batting titles. But if you think any team in baseball is built to make the post season even if most things go wrong, you're foolish. The Yankees were a strong team, injuries piled up, oh look they missed the post-season. The Nats were literally pegged the best team in baseball pre-season, they fell short of expectations on the field and they barely had a winning record. Things must go right in order for ANY team to succeed. The '03 Marlins are a great example, a lot had to go right for that to happen...
-
Mark Trumbo
That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. Teams don't meet expectations all of the time. That has little to do with everything going right or wrong. I agree, teams rarely meet expectations all the time. Usually about 10 per year do... The ones that MAKE the post season usually have things go right.
-
Mark Trumbo
It's far too optimistic to expect everyone to either meet their potential or match what they have done in career high seasons. You are pretty much counting on that. In all fairness, just about everything has to go right for most playoff teams... That's usually what puts them in the post-season. I'm not disagreeing with you. If all goes well, that could be a winning team. If it went both ways, could be close to .500. If everyone bombs and they can't stay healthy, it's a 90 loss team. Still an improvement... They need to do something. That's not really true at all. Most playoff caliber teams have some room for error. You are basically unreasonably counting on people to either break out or perform at their career bests just to field a winning team. Again I disagree, people viewed the Nats as baseballs best team going to this season. Things did not go as planned, they finished well behind expectations and missed the post season. Red Sox and Cards had everyone perform at a top level and look what happened...
