marlins24
Marlins Destroy Orioles Date: 2004-03-10 Credit: AP FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) Ramon Castro is looking like a fine fit at catcher for the Florida Marlins, who need a replacement for Ivan Rodriguez. Castro hit his team-leading third homer of the spring and had three RBIs Wednesday, helping a Marlins split squad beat the Baltimore Orioles 15-7. He signed a one-year $400,000 contract with the Marlins in the fall. The departure of Rodriguez to the Detroit Tigers means Castro and another backup catcher, Mike Redmond, could play bigger roles this season. Castro hit .283 with five home runs in 53 at-bats in 2003. His solo homer Wednesday came in the fifth inning; the game was tied at 2 in the sixth when Florida scored six runs off loser Adam Loewen, the Orioles' No. 1 pick in the 2002 amateur draft. The left-hander walked all four batters he faced, and all scored. "This was a spring training game - a lot of hitting, a lot of mediocre pitching and a lot of walks," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. The Orioles handed out a total of nine free passes. "Too many walks," Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said. "We started the inning with walks, there were two-out walks - those come back to burn you all the time." Baltimore's Omar Daal rebounded from a rocky first spring start to toss three shutout innings. He allowed two singles and walked a batter, and was helped out by a pair of double-play grounders. It was a far cry from the left-hander's March 5 start, when he allowed four runs on seven hits in two innings. Daal is fighting to be the Orioles' fifth starter. Florida starter Dontrelle Willis spent the afternoon trying to smooth out his delivery and using his offspeed pitches. He went two innings, allowing two hits and two runs - one earned - while walking two and striking out two. "I'm just worried about executing pitches," Willis said. "Thus far I've been able to throw my offspeed pitches in the zone better than I did last year." Tommy Phelps got the win with two innings of one-hit relief. bman8316
Yeah it may not mean anything but look at some of the numbers put up today, I mean 15 runs with no Lowell and Cabs and Niner for only a few innings. I just cant wait for opening day when it counts.

Hanleylicious
As if it means anything...... I believe it does mean something.... ...confidence is the intangible that played a big part in us winning the World Series last year, and It is not only measured in the regular season. It starts in Spring Training...hopefully our momentum will carry over to the regular season, and along with all of our talent and unlimited confidence...we will go far. LCastillo, I was thinking the same thing and I started to post this long thing about it but I decided against it. Glad you did. It's all about winning, whether its on a sandlot or in Yankee Stadium. If Jack taught these guys anything its that winning is fun and fun is winning. And every kid from A ball to AAA is learning the same thing this spring. Good post. Beinfest4Prez
Lets say it again, Pudge who? Ramon is playing very well, except for a few minor defense differences, but his offence is possible even better. The ST does mean a lot because it is grassroots baseball basically. Everyone gets a chance to play and show off their talent. Like LCastillo says Jack makes winning fun. BTW: Grasesqui (sp?) just strick out the side. :thumbup
geemoney
I didn't say winning didn't mean anything...I was saying watching the standings didn't mean anything, since the post I replied to talked about the standings, not necessarily winning in general. jonnylons
I went to this game guys and here are my observations: Miggy is ready - RIGHT NOW. That homerun was a blast to RF...he is a big kid and plays with poise. I thought he was going to be a star before...wow. Castro is going to hit better than we expect. The ball just jumps off his bat. He just missed a sac fly/home run in his first at bat because he didnt make good contact. But he made up for it with that home run. Let me say something here - the wind blowing in from LF was ridiculous today. Castro's homerun fought through the wind and hit a flag pole out in Leftcenter. That ball probably traveled about 400ft - into the wind. Wow... Abe Nunez should make this team. He has a cannon for an arm. He threw a ball from CF to 3B in the air. A lazer. And he crushed a ball to the wall in LF - again, into the wind. He stole a base and played good CF with pretty good range. He reminds me a little, physically, of a cross between Vlad and Bernie Williams. He is ready. Dontrelle looked good. Was locating his pitches pretty well. Seems to have sped his windup a little from the stretch. Has a tendency to rush his pitches in those situations but that should be ironed out with time and experience. Nannini did not impress me at all. He threw 5 straight balls at one point. He has pretty good velocity, but very little movement. It is only spring training, and I am sure the FO saw something there. I think some time in AAA will do him some good. Still, there is something there but not yet. Valdez is a Castllo clone - well, pretty close. Willingham is going to be our next catcher after Castro. He can hit. No doubt - had a broken bat RBI which could have dented the wall if the bat held up. He just needs some time behind the plate. This team looked good. Everyone looked ready out there and well-coached. They executed when they needed to. Everyone was relaxed and confident. I too agree that winning is still winning. It is important to cultivate a winning attitude no matter what. This team has it. I am very impressed and feel we are in for another great season. Shamrock
Im telling you I love willingham...Takes walks, hits for power and average...we could have a mike piazza in development. I know this is far in the future, but there is no doubt that this kid is ready in 2005 and maybe even right now. If all goes well this season we might see a position change or trade in the next off-season.
