March 19, 200422 yr 3 Unearned Runs because of a Throwing Error by gonzo......what's up with him!? JUPITER, Fla. -- The Marlins overcame a five-run deficit and used an unearned run to trip up the Cardinals, 7-6, Friday at Roger Dean Stadium. Alex Gonzalez's RBI out in the eighth inning pushed across the decisive run. Hee-Seop Choi opened the inning by reaching on a two-base error by second baseman Marlon Anderson. Gerald Williams pinch-ran for Choi and moved to third on Mike Redmond's sacrifice bunt. With the infield in, Gonzalez laced a line drive to Hector Luna at short. Luna tried to make a leaping grab, but the ball popped out of his glove. Gonzalez was thrown out at first as Williams snapped a 6-6 tie. Matt Perisho picked up the win, while Kiko Calero took the loss. Armando Benitez worked the ninth for a save. Both starters had a rough time. Marlins left-hander Dontrelle Willis gave up four runs on five hits in two innings. Three of the runs, however, were unearned because of a throwing error by Gonzalez at short. Willis threw 53 pitches, of which 31 were strikes. St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter cruised for two innings before giving up five runs on seven hits in the third. Edgar Renteria started a four-run second inning for the Cardinals with a one-out single, and he went to third on Luna's single to right. Mike Matheny's sacrifice fly to center drove in the first run. Carpenter bounced a chopper that Gonzalez backhanded on the outfield grass. His low throw couldn't be scooped up by Wil Cordero at first base, allowing Luna to score. Emil Brown followed with an RBI double and So Taguchi added a run-scoring single. Luna's RBI single in the third off Blaine Neal gave the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. The Marlins roared back with five runs in the third off Carpenter. Sending 10 batters to the plate, Florida had seven hits in the inning. Redmond led off with a single and scored on Gonzalez's double. Neal sacrificed Gonzalez to third, and Juan Pierre had an RBI single to right. After Luis Castillo singled, Miguel Cabrera ripped an RBI single to center. Mike Lowell's run-scoring single to left drove in another run, and Cordero tied it with a double to right. In the fourth, the Marlins went up 6-5 on Castillo's RBI double after Pierre reached on a bunt single. St. Louis pulled even in the fifth on Scott Rolen's sacrifice fly, scoring Anderson.
March 19, 200422 yr Sea Bass is not hitting, and now he is not fielding well. Someone needs a nap. Easley looked really good here in Fort Myers except he committed a big error at SS trying to rush his throw before he got the ball allowing a man to get on base. But his homer was pretty good, going over the fence and into the lake. If Sea Bass needs a rest on the pine, Easley can fill in.
March 19, 200422 yr I know it doesn't mean much, but thanks to Spring Training, I don't remember feeling this good going into a season than I do now.
March 19, 200422 yr SeaBass needs to get all his errors out now so he'll be error free during the season :thumbup so him and Luiy can be the best DP combo in the majors :thumbup
March 19, 200422 yr ^I agree! I don't remember feeling this good about things even after last year and look how things turned out. A Gonz will be fine and he will hit well come the regular season. I'm not worried :thumbup
March 19, 200422 yr Come this tuesday we will be two weeks away from opening day. So Alex better get everything out of his system in two weeks. :thumbup
March 19, 200422 yr I was at the game, it was Cordero's fault not Gonzalez's. AGon made an amazing play and he threw the ball, spinning backwards, in the air, and moving to his left, but Cordero couldn't pick the throw. And AGon was also hitting the ball the most crisp out there, he got robbed arguably twice, but for certain once...

Alex did hit a nice triple into the left field corner to start the rally. The next AB he flied out deep on a ball that was caught 2/3 up the wall in left. That after he drilled one down the line that was only foul by a few feet. He's making good contact, just missing the holes.
March 19, 200422 yr And Benitez got his first save by pitching a perfect ninth. :thumbup Two fly outs and one strike out. He looked pretty good.
