Record crowd of 50,000-plus expected for Marlins'

Featured Replies

VERO BEACH - There is little doubt that the Marlins' opening day crowd will be the largest in franchise history.

More than 46,000 tickets have been sold for next Tuesday's opener and team officials expect the final count to exceed 50,000 -- easily surpassing the previous record of 42,334 for the franchise's inaugural game in 1993.

Attendance for last season's opener was 37,137.

PROSPECTS GET THEIR CHANCE

The Marlins gave a few of the regulars a day off Monday, allowing several of their minor-league prospects a chance to get into a spring training game.

One of those was outfielder Jeremy Hermida, the Marlins' first-round draft pick in the 2002 June draft. Hermida hit .284 at Single A Greensboro last season and will start this season at Single A Jupiter.

''Maybe I'll get to Double A about halfway through the season,'' said Hermida, 20.

Hermida said he hopes it won't be long before it makes it to the majors.

''Hopefully I'd get a call-up at the end of next year,'' he said. ``Maybe by 2006 I'll get a chance to earn a spot [in the big leagues].''

Hermida is a natural right-hander who was taught to bat left-handed by his father when he was four years old.

WILLIS WITNESS ACCIDENT

Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis witnessed a car accident on the Florida Turnpike on Monday and stopped to offer assistance.

Willis, who was on his way to Vero Beach to start against the Dodgers, said there were no injuries, but that one of the cars in the two-car wreck was severely damaged.

''It happened right in front of me,'' Willis said. ``Everyone was all right, though.''

65 for baseball

The attendance will be around 55,000. They will probably sell 50,000 before the game starts and 5,000 of walk up

5000 walk-up.... there are more walk-up tickets sold for a regular season game! For the opener the walk-up crowd will sell-out the game

I'm getting so excited opening day is 8 days away. the night before openging day i will be watching the Marlins World Series DVD for the 50 millionth time. :D

Side question, whats the largest regular season crowd the marlins have ever had?

At home: 45,900 on October 3, 1993 vs. the NY Mets

Road: at Colorado on April 25, 1993...71,192

I think it depends on how the game is advertised. If the media keeps stressing the numbers, we might not get that many walk up because people will just assume they won't get tickets. But if the media doesn't stress the number and stresses there are seats still available, then you will have a larger walk up and possibly capacity crowd.

I expect right now 60,000, give or take a couple G's.

I wish I were you :lol

Welcome and Happy Day! Prior's Hurt, Baseball starts tomorrow, and 8 days until the Champs are back. What more could you ask?

Yeah I think so

Tickets are sold up to section 425....next to the last bend in center field. Only 5 or 6 more section to fill in to make it a sell-out. :thumbup

One week to go. Are there going to be any seats left for walk ups on opening day?
