March 30, 200422 yr A friend of mine, who goes to UM, told me that his professor, who is on the "stadium committee," told the class that the Marlins have agreed in principle to a deal that would put their new stadium on the site of the old Miami Arena. The deal is pretty much "done" and that only a few technicalities remain. Again, take this as nothing more than a rumor, but I was so excited I just had to let it out. :thumbup *keeping fingers crossed* Also, I can't really answer the "funding gap" questions I know will come, because all I was told was that "it's been taken care of." :confused Sorry.

Rumor or not.... whatever.... hearing this will let me sleep better tonight......
March 30, 200422 yr That would be interesting - and surprising to say the least. But it would be welcomed news - just like me passing my comprehensive exams! Yeah baby, MA in Classics...
March 30, 200422 yr Excuse me, but what "stadium committee?" If there is a committee that is made up of members of the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County, then I've never heard of this "committee." Furthermore, by state statute (Chapter 286, Florida Statutes), no meeting of a committee that consists of elected officials, or officials appointed by a governing legislative body, can make decisions without there being a duly noticed public hearing and all discussions must be made at this pubic hearing. I'm sorry, but I think this UM professor is full of s**t. Don't mean to rain on your parade, but lets allow the facts to rule here, not rumor and baseless hyperbole.
March 30, 200422 yr I agree somewhat with Marlins2003, seems a bit odd. It would clearly shock me based on what has been reported. Nevertheless, that is my favorite site of the ones being discussed and I would welcome the news.
March 30, 200422 yr Let me try to explain my cryptic response since I've been asked - The Miami Arena sits on a lot which is roughly 215,000 sqft, a quarter of what is needed (just stadium now not parking, ancilliary uses or anything else. Sopher is projected to buy it for $25 million. If the City decides to turn it over the Marlins, someone will be on the hook the paying off the debt and debt service. Assuming for a moment that might be true then you have to try to assemble adjoining lots to the east because you can't go west or south (if the Arena is part of the footprint) because of the FEC tracks so you have to go east. Immediately east are 13 lots owned by eight corporations with a total square footage 143,000 and an appraised value of over $8,000,000 which would cost you $20 million to aggregate. So between the Miami Arena and lots east of it you are talking in the vicinity of $45 million to put together a site that is still only half as big as you need. Just in case you're thinking of going north that's the Technology Center of the Americas. To put this in perspective the main PPS site is 6 million sq ft (not including the east and south satellite lots nor the west unpaved lot). The stadium itself (including the concourse around the building) is approximately 1 million sq ft. Let's say the Marlins wanted a smaller stadium they would need a minimum of 600,000 sq ft. If you assemble all the east lots PLUS the Miami Arena you still come up short. Add on top of that, if a professor (those who can, do. Those who can't, teach) announced this to his class it would be all over the media by now, not to mention one of the area landowners spilling the beans. Pure unadulterated BS is what this is.
March 30, 200422 yr (those who can, do. Those who can't, teach) sounds like Marlins2003 got too many detentions when he was in school....
March 30, 200422 yr Marlins 2003, Hasn't most of the speculation been about the lots west of the old arena? My thought process was that Sopher was going to build his parking garage where the old arena was and the stadium would be put in the city owned lots west of the arena just east of the metrorail station. All just rumor and speculation but I always thought the actual arena site was out because of the train tracks.
March 30, 200422 yr This is total, unadulterated BS: (those who can, do. Those who can't, teach) What kind of football/lockerroom BS is that? What does that have to do with this situation? If this deal goes through, I expect a lot of crow to be eaten here. This seems almost personal for you. I admit, finding info from a teacher at UM is very suspect - I mean, does anyone with any brains actually come from UM?!! I dont have all the fancy stats you put up Marlins2003, but I think your opinion valid here. Yet, I dont know enough about the situation, despite what you have said, to denounce it so readily. Is it possible that a professor from UM is on this committee? Yes, because I am in academia and I know how these situations can arise. Is the Miami Arena a site being considered? Surely it is. One cannot dismiss the timing of the purchase of the Miami Arena and the Marlins' stadium efforts. Too much coincedence. So we are left where we started from. Nothing official, nothing announced, endless possibilities.
March 30, 200422 yr I admit, finding info from a teacher at UM is very suspect - I mean, does anyone with any brains actually come from UM?!!? You just HAD to go and cross that that line didn't you.... :chair I'll just assume you meant everyone but me. :hat
March 30, 200422 yr Geez guys, that expression is forty years old, I didn't author it, people have been using it since I was a kid. I didn't mean to disparage any of you out there that are teachers. My apologies. And yes I got my share of detentions (lol) but good grades. When we had detention we had to chisel in stone 100 times "I will not draw on the cave walls again". My point is that the Miami Arena and east is not possible, I said nothing about west of the Arena site.
March 30, 200422 yr I go to school im MDC and i ride the Metro-Mover and Metro-Rail every day, there is no way in hell that anyone can fit a 38,000 seat stadium between the metrorail and the arena it just aint happening. In reality there is only about 100 to 200 yards distance between the metrorail tracks and the arena. so please get that idea out of your head.

By no means do I think you are lying. I just wanted to see if you knew the name of the professor to see if I knew him. Your post, although a bit hard to believe, at the very least provides some hope. I know there are skeptics out there who would rather not cling to speculation, but I like to hear any rumors because more often then not where there is smoke , there is also fire. I too am crossing my fingers for a stadium anywhere in South Florida, but I admit stadium in Downtown Miami would be sweeeeeeet!
