May 24, 200323 yr Adam Dunn or Steve Smitherman for Brad Penny and Luis Castillo? *tsn.com* As if the Reds need another stud outfielder, Stephen Smitherman is mashing in the Southern League. Through 44 games he was hitting .309 with nine homers and 30 RBIs. He strikes out a lot (42 times in 147 AB), but he also draws a ton of walks (24 BB and a .409 OB). He could be the player that allows GM Jim Bowden to trade Adam Dunn for some pitching help -- with Austin Kearns, Ken Griffey, Jr., Jose Guillen and Wily Mo Pena all currently in the majors, such a move would make a lot of sense, especially with Smitherman on the way. ... thoughts? Id first just offer Brad and some AA pitching prospect....... now if we keep sucking, I offer up Castillo too..... They need someone to set the table.
May 24, 200323 yr For Dunn's potential.. I'd trade Brad and Castillo.. how about we add Lee in there so we can get Casey :mischief2 :shifty
May 24, 200323 yr Author For Dunn's potential.. I'd trade Brad and Castillo.. how about we add Lee in there so we can get Casey :mischief2 :shifty Reds arent dumb.... let DLee go as a free agent, and we may get a 1st round compensatory pick from wherever he signs.... Dunn, Lowell, Sea Bass, Pierre, Encarnacion, Castro not a bad little core.... and still with Pavano, Beckett, Redman, Burnett(out), Willis, whoever... *gets goosebumps*
May 24, 200323 yr I'd throw in Tejera for yesterday's newspaper. But wasnt it just the other day Ramp that you confirmed that I said they were untouchable (Dunn and Kearns) I see the Reds exploring all options for Griffey before Dunn.
May 24, 200323 yr Author fine. then try to get this Smitherman kid. I assumed they were untouchable...Kearns is definitely, but as I read some stuff, it appears that Dunn may be available for some pitching and/or 2nd baseman
May 24, 200323 yr Author this was from a Reds poster named LVJ Marlins/Reds Smitherman, Basham, Olmedo for Penny, Castillo Looks pretty fair..... if we are out of it in another month(most likely)
May 24, 200323 yr who is basham? lets just trade away more major league talent for minor league prospects. i love it.
May 24, 200323 yr Author um Das.... if we are out of it in another month, Castillo will be gone anyway, and possibly even Penny... Basham is a pretty good pitching prospect. I hope we dont have to do the deal or any deal... i hope this team goes on a little run, but most likely, this season is over..... i hope i am wrong though
May 24, 200323 yr Author but I forgot.... if we can keep Lowell, that would mean Cabs could be our power hitting OF that we want.....
May 24, 200323 yr so lets just start all over again with more prospects? at what point do you commit yourself toward contending for a pennant?
May 24, 200323 yr Author grrr.... i love rhetorical questions this team has a month to prove themselves...... if they cant hack it, then this team(unfortunately) should not be together... We are probably going to lose Castillo and hopefully DLee...... it would be nice to get some quality players in return....hopefully major leaguers.... dont you think?
May 24, 200323 yr It would be nice to fully identify your core. Has that ever been done. What everyday player is a part of yoru core? question.
May 24, 200323 yr Author here is 'my' core..... Mike Lowell, Alex Gonzalez, Ramon Castro, AJ Burnett, Josh Beckett, Braden Looper, Juan Pierre, Juan Encarnacion, Armando Almanza, Dontrelle Willis, Mark Redman, Tim Spooneybarger, Carl Pavano Players who could/should be dealt or not resigned: Brad Penny Derrek Lee Luis Castillo Mike Tejera Blaine Neal Mike Redmond Todd Hollandsworth
May 24, 200323 yr that's your core ramp. who have the Marlins identified as their core. AJ and Beckett I guess. You need positional players as part of your core. Lowell should be in that category, yet you constantly hear trade rumors and the Marlins do nothing to dispell them. You could argue for Castillo being in that category also. Point being, you have to wonder what the 'plans' are for this organization.
May 24, 200323 yr oh and ramp... i dont put almanza in your must keep category. left handed relievers are a dime a dozen. Alamanza has done nothing amazing to warrant being placed in that category. I would keep Mike Redmond. Very valuable reserve catcher. Castillo you could go either way with.... But I still maintain that Pierre AND Castillo do not work together well. You cannot keep both long term. The rest of your list I could live with on our major league roster.
May 24, 200323 yr Author ok, take Mando off the list and replace with Red.... My core is pretty solid, and with Cabs and possibly Adrian on the way.....
May 24, 200323 yr well i dont see red as a guy you consider part of your core.... just one of those veterans you really want to have around...along with andy fox. the rest of the bench.... can be interchanged with many other players.
May 24, 200323 yr Author right. i didnt mean he was part of the core... more like a good guy and baseball mind to have around.... and as you said.... like Andy Fox or even Mike Mordecai
May 24, 200323 yr mordecai is a nice guy to have...but not one i would bend over backward to keep..... he does the same things as fox...just not as well.
May 24, 200323 yr D.Lee has a better batting average than dunn has. :whistle Dunn has more homeruns and RBIs than DLee oh and actually knows what a clucth hit is plus can play first... :whistle
