HELP COMING?

It's no secret that the middle relievers, including Nate Bump, Toby Borland, Justin Wayne and Ben Howard, have been inconsistent. Beinfest said he's always looking to reinforce his pitching staff, but instead of trades he'd rather promote from within.

"Pitching is always difficult to acquire," Beinfest said. "We have some candidates from within. Josias Manzanillo is throwing very well for us. Randy Messinger is throwing well. We're holding our breath for Chad [Fox] to see if the elbow starts healing better."

Guys, Bienfest is playing the game...they start out asking for Jason Stokes for Jason Grimsley. We start off offering an A ball prospect. We're in first place and who knows, we could find the guy in the minors...it is up to a team like the Royals to make it reasonable enough for us not to look within.

Jason Grimsley: 2004 - 3.22 ERA 1.39 WHIP; CAREER - 4.76 ERA 1.55 WHIP

Grimsley works almost exclusively with two pitches mid-90s fastballs and sinkers he uses to get groundballs. His occasional splitter has not been useful. Because he's ready to work every game, he fits the setup role well. But his lack of sharp control would hurt him in a lengthy closer role. Grimsley isn't a good fielder and has just an average move to first. He focuses too much on getting ahead of batters instead of holding runners.

Nate Bump: 2004 - 4.98 ERA 1.69 WHIP; CAREER - 4.84 ERA 1.58 WHIP

Bump doesn't overpower hitters, but he keeps them off balance with a sinker-slider repertoire that produces numerous groundballs. His two-seam fastball sits in the low 90s and has good life. His slider has late break and can pick up strikes for him as well. His solid changeup is effective against lefthanded hitters. A good athlete, Bump fields his position well, holds runners and is quick enough to the plate. He had just one career plate appearance, dropping down a sacrifice bunt.

Is Grimsley really any better of a pitcher? Is he worth prospects and his million dollar contract?

I still think Mike Neu deserves a shot on the big club now that he is healthy

Amen. Another thing I have been saying all year long - no need to trade, promote from within. We have enough quality pitchers to find a formula.

We are in first place and there is no need to sell the farm to get us over the hump. That will come later on if we are STILL in first place (which I fully expect to be).

Neu is a solid arm who could get it done at this level. If Fox comes back, probably in a month or so, we will have the makings of a very good pen. Perisho, Phelps, Neu, Fox, Benitez - that is pretty good. Remember, when Beckett comes back, Phelps is going to the pen.

There is also KEVIN Olsen down at AAA along with Tejera. I still think Howard will improve and work things out. We also still have Oliver and Bump, who are struggling, but could give us innings.

I think there are a lot of options right now and no reason to make a move. Stand pat, and stay the course. This team is doing fine.

Mike Neu's line so far, in limited action (he was put on the DL immediately after the spring, they found out he had elbow issues, he came off recently):

0-0, 0.00 ERA, 5.1 IP (4 games), 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K

AZ just sent Brian Bruney back down. The kid is rough around the edges, but looked like he had potentially very good stuff. I'd bet Rosy could get him shaped up pretty quickly.

With Sexon going down for the rest of the year, AZ might be looking for some added IF backup. Hillenbrand is fine, but they're light in the IF if they have another injury.

You suggesting trading Dillon? Or perhaps, Sutton? To AZ?

The effect that a bullpen can have is rather minor if you have a good rotation and decent lineup as we do.

The Braves, Red Sox, Cubs and us all made the playoffs last year with below-average bullpens. The Royals and Red Sox had abysmal bullpens last year and did very well.

Yes but they at least had one or two quality arms to go with their abysmal pens. Sure, Benitez is one...whose the other guy? Perisho is close but is a lefty specialist. I really think that if Neu was any good, he would have originally made the team.

I hope there is help coming. We wont be in first place for long without a solid bullpen. Bullpen has been costing us alot of runs. We also need some help in hitting, Carlos Beltran would be the perfect fit to back up lowell and cabrera.

carlos beltran ain't "backin up" anybody, he's at #3, cabs to 5, if we get him.

and we won't.

just because Bruney was sent down, doesnt mean they want to ship him off

if that was the case Id go after Ryan Wagner
