PWNED!

What in the name of God are you talking about?

@_@

Maybe you had to live through the 60's, 70's, and 80's to understand it...

Times were a lot stranger than today.

Duck & cover - a standard drill for school kids in the 60's when the cold war was going full tilt boogie. If the warning came that Soviet nukes were inbound and there wasn't time to make it to a fallout shelter, you ducked under your desk, covered your head, and faced away from the windows. My school was about 8 miles as the crow flies from an obvious ground zero target (US Army cannon manufacturing facility). The threat of being nuked was taken pretty seriously back then.

Gas rationing - that's a early-mid-70's kinda thing that went on during the Arab oil embargo. You didn't just tool on up to the pump, swipe your plastic and motor away with a full tank. You could get gas on even/odd days based on the last digit/letter of your licence plate number. Lines often stretched to over 100 cars in some places, and sometimes you could only get 10 gallons max. Not a good time to be driving a gas hog. This is what kicked off the whole sub-compact car notion in the USA.

Iran hostages - in the late 70's the Iranians, after staging a revolution to boot the Shah, decided to storm the US embassy in Tehran and take a bunch of hostages. The political standoff lasted well over 400 days and was what sunk Jimmy Carter's reelection hopes. We sent an aborted rescue mission that failed for a whole bunch of different reasons and got a bunch of guys killed out in the desert in Iran when a chopper smacked into one of the support aircraft somehow and blew the crap out of the LZ. This Iranian desert failure was the event that caused us to realize we'd be needing a specialized team that could do hostage rescue and snatch missions in the future - Delta Force was born out of the Iranian debacle.

Achille Lauro - an Italian cruise ship in the Med that was hijacked by the PLO back when Arafat was still looking to make his rep. Leon (handicapped and in a wheelchair) was just an ordinary passenger out for a cruise. The PLO wasted him and dumped his body overboard. This incident was probably the one that made terrorism a household word around the world. Arafat and the PLO got their rep and were officially "big time".

Beirut - early 80's, Reagan had this notion that a US presence in Lebanon could help keep a lid on the civil war that was raging there (which was originally kicked off when the PLO essentially moved their base of ops into southern Lebanon). Once the "jewel of the Med", and a major banking center in the region, Beirut had been turned into a veritable MadMax type place with everyone killing everyone else. Someone managed to get a truck bomb into the marine barracks there and blew it sky high - hundreds of dead marines. We cut and run, Lebanon is still a mess today. US military prestige hits rock bottom.

There, you have it - the 60's 70's and 80's in a nutshell :lol My dad tells me stories about how he farted in a car while driving in the Military. Everyone had to leave the car. Do you got any kick ass stories like that?
