June 9, 200323 yr The new york yankees really want bullpen help and are turning to other teams but really they have there eye on Loop. That's why the Yankees are on the lookout for relief help -- specifically an experienced right-handed power arm for the late innings. The names of Texas closer Ugueth Urbina and Pittsburgh closer Mike Williams have come up, as they always seem to, in the Yankees' internal discussions. But the Yankees would have to convince either of those closers to accept a setup role, which could create more discontent and confusion about roles than the bullpen already has. Other possibilities include Cincinnati's Scott Sullivan, a right-handed specialist the Yankees have liked for a while, and Florida's Braden Looper, who is definitely available. Link
June 9, 200323 yr Looper's talent is underutilized. Moving him for talent that can replace the positional players that will be gone after the year would be huge. Let's face it, the Marlins' need for a great closer will be a little bit down the list during an offseason when they have to replace at least three everyday starters.
June 9, 200323 yr Looper is the next rob nen so if i was the marlins i would not trade looper! I just died of laughter Your kidding me right?
June 9, 200323 yr Author Loop isnt a Robb Nen but he can close out games for us. He just sometimes leaves the ball up and they take advantage but if he learns how to spot his pitches he can be a really effective closer in the near future....
June 9, 200323 yr With the exception of Bryan Harvey, every Marlins closer has been the kind of guy that is either so on he'll fire 99 MPH fastballs and the team won't get the ball out of the infield, or he'll load the bases with no one out: Nen, Powell, Alfonseca, Nunez, and Looper. Looper can pitch, but he isn't THAT valuable.
June 9, 200323 yr Even if Looper had the skills Nen did (which he doesn't)he'll never get the save opportunities here.
June 9, 200323 yr no rune i'm not kidding u i'm talking 4 real watch and learn and see. No he doesn't! Seriously are you blind? IF Looper was The Next Nen then I guess Ramiro Mendoza is The Next Lee Smith. One you need to win on a regular basis to be like Nen Second... You can't have a guy in front of you that is capable to be A Closer and will be soon Third... Rob Nen is one of the best stoppers in the game at his old age. If Looper really was The next Nen wouldn't be running laps around him now? IMO he's one of The Best Closers of all time and I sure most agree with that. Looper should be traded at the deadline when the rush for closers is being done by contending teams. Hell I think Looper could be in A Phillies Uniform this season.
June 9, 200323 yr I would hate to see Loop go, and he is not Robb Nen, but is showing signs that he could be the next great Marlins closer. But like someone said, if we can trade Loop for guys who will eventually be position players here and will have an impact, I am all for it...
June 9, 200323 yr Was that just Me and Wild Card agreeing on something?? This is a sure sign on the impending apocalypse.
June 9, 200323 yr Was that just Me and Wild Card agreeing on something?? This is a sure sign on the impending apocalypse. LoL. Well, we are right on this. Would you rather have a prospect or two (figuritively speaking) that can eventually become the next Mike Lowell or Derrek Lee, or would you rather have Braden Looper? If you can get talent that will be your future on the field all day and every day for the price of an unproven but good closer, you take the future talent. Closers are easier to find than talent for the positions...
June 9, 200323 yr While I agree partly with Fish Fillet's point... ..for instance I think it's terrible for the Padres to pay Trevor Hoffman 10 million dollars when they're quite capable of losing 90 games with or without him.... ....I think this case is different. First, Looper is not a great closer, nor does he make "great closer money". However, he might be coming into his own this season. If so, an affordable closer isn't the easiest thing to find in this league. I think they ought to keep him. Those of you who think we're getting some young stud for Looper (who has yet to even complete a full season as the team's closer) I think you're overrating him. Still....if you look at what we got for Matt Mantei though.... Brad Penny, Vlad Nunez, and Abe Nunez...uh....well, one out of three ain't bad I guess.
June 9, 200323 yr Those of you who think you're going to get some future stud for Braden Looper, (who has yet to even complete a season as the team's full-time closer) are dreaming. Well, he is one of those guys that if he has a great season, will command a good amount in arbitration. After the season, if he does have that great season, we will be able to trade him for a good/great prospect(s).
