The Military Draft

Featured Replies

Some people say it's not true and others say it is, but with the thousands of troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and other less popular nations that the U.S have deployed troops to, dozens die almost every day. They're also looking for some military action in Iran and Syria sooner or later. The military draft is almost iminent but don't expect it before spring 2005. Opinions anyone?

I have also heard that people eligible for the military draft won't be allowed to go to Canada this time. I would dodge.

Wether Kerry or Bush are elected, they don't have a choice.

Exactly! Bush or Kerry, both would be faced with this daunting possibility.

Why would you dodge? I understand if you are against this war and the lies that took us there, but dodging the draft is like turning your back to your country when it needs you the most. I think this war is the most pathetic and outrageous mistake ever made... But one can't run from ones mistakes. Whether we like it or not, Bush f***ed us all and we need to fix his mess... Leaving this toy broken is only going to cause us more pain and death in the future. Thanks to Bush we will be spending a lot of time and money fixing his disaster, but we have no alternative; we can't leave.

Let me tell you something, I AM NOT GOING TO FIGHT A WAR FOR THIS COUNTRY.

ESPECIALLY THIS WAR. Send me to jail. It goes agaisnt everything I stand for. We are NOT defending our country, we are not! These are ridicoulous "pre-emptive" strikes, The US bullies it's "allies" into helping them, S. Korea for example, and look what happend to an innocent S. Korean guy? I'm not going over to Irag for suicide bombing or decapitations or random seiges with innocent women and children being killed in the way. I am not going to take part in this bulls***. Becasue that's what this war is. Bull s***, I am not going to risk my life for this. I don't believe this cause is just. Maybe If I believed what I was fighiting for I'd go, but No way.

think what you will of me, I am not afraid to die, because it is inevitable. I just don't want to die doing something I dont believe in.

I wouldn't support the draft because:

a) it reminds me of totalitarian regimes, yet, I acknowledge that its use is justified in case of emergency (WWII), but I'm not sure if the situation right now calls for re-instituting the draft

b) part of what makes our armed forces so great is that they're all VOLUNTEERS

I don't think any such measure would be approved by Congress. We are fighting a war on terror, but no massive deployments are necessary, IMO. This isn't a war where you send a million men/women to land on a beach and fight, so you really don't need overwhelming forces, unless you're invading a country (Iraq). Second, I don't see us invading Iran/Syria in the near future...the defense budget is limited, and we can't just go through the Middle East doing whatever the hell we want!

I may or may not agree on our reasons for going into Iraq, but I think we are doing good things out there....and if my country tells me I need to, I'm not gonna run away. Of course, this all sounds like b.s. because, well, it's a message board. I could say anything I want on here. But, my brother is probably going to attend West Point, my uncle has served in the army, my dad didn't run away when he got drafted (turns out they started pulling troops out by the team he was ready to go or whatever), and sure as hell won't. It would take acts of genocide or something incredibly immoral for me to not go.

Whoever is President (Kerry, Bush, etc.) I will respect, and if they need me, I will go.

here is a quote by some guy who commented on that article:

Democrat, or Republican, theyre both f***ing you right up the ass. Who goes and dies? the poor. Who signs the bill to make the poor go and die? a rich man who cheated his way out of serving his duty to protect "one nation under god", because his daddy hooked him up with a Natl. Guard job.... that he didnt go to. So, its high time we move for change, armed or not, we cant sit by and take it. Long live freedom!

3 of my uncles and my grandfather served in the armed forces, 1 of my uncles is now insanse due to vietnam, and my other 2 are just "all american" blah blah, bs.

Look, Im not going to run away, im just not going to go. They'll have to arrest me. Or i may be living in Austrailia by then, because i do plan to move there sooner or later.

I know exactly how you feel. Bush is the greatest mistake Americans have ever made... But what are we supposed to do now? We already f***ed up, invaded a country that did not need to be invaded, pissed off a whole bunch of people and helped Osama Bin Laden with his recruiting efforts... What do you think we should do? Leave? Turn our backs to the problem we've created and wait until they come back here again to kill us for the destruction, pain and humiliation we've put them trough?

I am sorry, but we can't do that. We have to understand that as a country we have to fight together and "FIX" our mistakes together. I wish Bush would have had a little bit more of vision and common sense before he got us into such unnecessary mess, but he did it.

I understand your feelings about this war. We are not defending our country against the enemy they told us we were fighting. However, that enemy has become a reality thanks to Bush's pre-emptive doctrine. If Iraq fails, we all fail. We can't allow for that to happen, therefore we need to stick it out and do everything we can to avoid a greated catastrophe... Extremists are now empowered... Someone has to fight them.

I back you 100%...I oppose the war, but if my country calls, I'll be ready to defend it.

the rich cheat their way out huh?

name a corparate CEO or anyone in the corparate world who has ever served in a war.

as for Lcyberlina, well, I don't see how us "fighinting" is going to help anymore. Are we just going to piss off more people?

....maybe we can just accidently drop a nuke somewhere in the middle east...and it'll "accidently" explode...

that wasnt serious, but alot of people have been saying that, and for the longest time i thought it was the dumbest idea ever, now im not so sure

Well let me correct myself... How about "Peacekeeping" and use of Intelligence in those countries.

Man! How can you say that? I know that the extremists are many, but there are many many more people caught in between Maniac. Contrary to what many think, not all arabs are terrorists.

i am aware not all arabs are terrorists, saying all of them are is ridiculous...im just saying the good arabs are already elsewhere....that sounds ridiculous too...nm

maybe we should just bomb the US? Were the ones casuing all this ruckus.

But seriously, whats the difference between bombing them with a nuke, or bombing them with thousads of scud missles and sending troops in which casues terrosits to suicide bomb, which kills more people. We'd be saving american and collalition lives by killing them all...kind of like Hiroshima and Nagasaki, that was the thinking then, was it not? Save American Lives/

OK, I see 2 big flaws in this article.

1) The Administration is not backing this.

2) The twin bills were introduced by Democrats and have barely enough support to be introduced, definitely not even enough to pass.

A draft is used when you do not have enough soldiers and servicemen as needed for an operation, but today in the day that the military is a career and one which has been volunteer only for over 2 decades, if a draft is imposed....it will not be pretty. You can expect politics to be turned upside down. Some Democrats continue to push this without realizing that nobody wants it and that is the reason we have fought wars the last 20 some years without a draft.

if this bill passes, i reserve the right to say "i told you so"

Republicans will not vote to it and neither will most Democrats because everyone knows a professional, volunteer army is more successful than a drafted one.

I won't fight the war because:

a) I don't believe in killing people.

b) I don't believe in this war.

The United States is the biggest threat to world peace.

I wouldn't fight for this country or this war. This war lied to all of the United States citizens saying things like they had wmd's and ties to osama bin ladense terrorist group. The Bush administration had the odassity to lie to millions of people with weak arguments and any evidence to back them up. The US invaded their country, destoyed their treasures and is now ready to suck up their water and oil. Iraq's location in the middle east is perfect for their intervention in the rest of the middle east.

I will not fight because of the evil agenda of the Bush administration.
