July 13, 200421 yr from your own link: The Authority's ridership study estimated annual ridership within the corridor between Tampa, Lakeland and Orlando by both local residents and visitors (Greeneway alignment) in 2010 to range from 1,657,000 - 1,904,000 generating revenues of $27.9 to $29.7 million. This is anticipated to grow to ridership of 2,450,000 - 2,844,000 and revenues of $41.6 - $44.5 million by 2025. 456508 That's much less than the metrorail no? 456511 thats one-tenth the ridership of the metrorail, and no way in hell this "guaranteed daily ridership exceeds what MetroRail gets in a day."
July 19, 200421 yr I would LOVE this. Last Friday I took an Amtrak train to Orlando from Ft. Lauderdale and it took SEVEN HOURS. I could have driven to Orlando and back in less time than that. The problem is the rail systems here are terrible, there is only a one-way track into Orlando and there are always constant delays for trains ahead always having to reverse and switch tracks and things like that. If the FTA just improved the current rail system in Florida everything would be fine and there would be no real need for a bullet train.
July 20, 200421 yr This is a trainwreck...pun intended. There is no way this thing turns a profit. Amtrak loses money like it's thier job, and public transportation is a losing proposition 99.9 percent of the time. Yet another example of the voting public's stupidity. Special interests managed to get an impulse buy referendum on the ballot and of course a public that doesn't know/care about finance signed on. I can't beleive stuff like this goes on in Florida. Just like the class size referendum, the public votes in ignorance to approve something just because it sounds good and the state is left holding the bag trying to implement it when everyone knows it will cost massive amounts of money the state doesn't have. Here's an idea... Use an airline. Last time I checked it was still faster than a train.
