July 30, 200422 yr MIAMI -- The Marlins are close to finalizing a deal that would land them Paul Lo Duca, Juan Encarnacion and Guillermo Mota from the Dodgers for Brad Penny, Hee Seop Choi and a minor leaguer. Sources told MLB.com that the deal was close to being finalized Friday and likely would be concluded before Saturday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline. If the trade is consummated, the Marlins upgrade offensively with Lo Duca taking over at catcher and Encarnacion returning to right field, where he was a standout on the Marlins 2003 World Series championship team. But the acquisitions would come at the expense of losing one of the most promising young right-handed pitchers in the league. Penny is 8-8 with a 3.15 ERA, and is the Marlins' all-time leader in victories with 48 wins. According to sources, the Marlins are exploring their options for another starting pitcher. And a potential snag to the deal is the Dodgers' ability to land another catcher. A source says Los Angeles is trying to obtain Charles Johnson from the Rockies. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp Those are snips..
