:(

They give you an IV and the next thing you know you're awake and have four less teeth. Your mouth will be sore for a few days, but after that, it's like it never happened.

Thanks for the info, should have done it earlier in the summer, instead of a week before school..

I've had all of them taken out.

I got nitrous then went to sleep with the anasthesia. You'll have pain in your mouth and there will be bleeding but overall its not that bad. Plus you get pain medication that you can sell to drug dealers... :plain

extraction, and the ability to make money out of a bit of pain - priceless

looks like it won't be as bad as I thought. Good to know..

When I had mine out, they put me in this room to regain my senses when I was coming off the nitrous/drugs, and the whole time I was hitting on the nurse/assistant...

I had gauze in my mouth, which in the process of me telling her how beautiful she was, fell out of my mouth and under the couch; I was so hopped up instead of looking under the couch for it, I just picked up the couch over my head to find it.... I was quickly escorted out after that..

i've also had all four of mine removed.

i think i had a combo of local and general anesthesia...i remember being knocked out for most of the procedure.

for me, the whole thing was a disaster. the holes kept bleeding and didn't heal properly, became pretty damn painful, and eventually resulted in a nasty infection (side note: why is it that every infection must be "nasty"? can't we have minor infections once in awhile?).

because of the infection, i needed surgery to remove and biopsy one of the then-humongous lymph nodes in my neck. during surgery, the doc was forced to snip 3/4 of a salivary gland to which the lymph node was stuck. nowadays i get some mean dry mouth, particularly in the morning, and i'm left with a surgical scar on my neck (it's not too bad since i had a plastic surgeon take out the node.).

my advice? read all the info your doc sends you home with, and make sure you DON'T SPIT when you're trying to clot the damn holes with your bloody gauze. enjoy!

Sucks to hear you had such a big complication with it dood, and thanks for the advice, i'll be sure to keep it in mind come tuesday.

I can see why people avoid dentists.

had mine taken out ... not too bad but not good either since I couldnt eat for my life

good part was that they did not put me to sleep ... so I just saw the dentist go to town in my mouth, forcing things out, screwing, hammering, pulling ... ohh man that was good fun

It's not that bad, the worst part was anticipating it...

And having to eat sh**y soft food like apple sauce and soup afterwords for about a day until you fully "recover"

  • Author

Thanks for the good luck wishes, waiting and recovering is probably gonna suck more than the actual process

The outcome seems to vary quite a bit. I had the first part of the problem that Shaq-Man describes. Its called dry sockets-causes bleeding for a long time, pain for what seemed like weeks and the sort. I didnt get an infection, but I did need to go back a few days later to take care of the dry sockets. Meanwhile, my girlfriend had hers out recently and was fine later in the day, which I think is the much more common outcome-you should be fine a day or two after.

I'm getting mine out Thursday, no big deal had bunch of stuff done to my teeth before. I'm just hoping I don't say anything stupid to my mom when she comes to pick me up.
