A very interesting question......

Alright folks, if you are going to make the playoffs, it is going to be on the arms of this young staff, mainly of one Carl Pavano.

So i'm making you a deal, you get to make the playoffs, but lose Pavano after the year because he goes somewhere else for huge money (whether or not he wins the Cy Young doesn't matter here, because making the playoffs with him leading the way makes him unaffordable for the fish).

OR

The Marlins fail to make the playoffs, but sign Pavano after the year to a long term (let's say 4 or 5 year) contract.

I make you no guarantees about what happens in the postseason, just that you are there and have a shot to repeat, since after all, the playoffs are a crapshoot anyways.

Take your pick!

:)

Making the playoffs is what its all about. Obviously you want to be there year after year but you have to take what you can get.

I'm siding with winning.

Don't know how much longer we can hold it.

playoffs for sure

and imo, whether we make the playoffs or not will not change his money for next year

I'd lay odds on the fact that we make the playoffs AND sign Pavano

I'm sorry, but I don't like your chances to outbid all the major market teams that will want Pavano if he ends up winning the Cy and/or leading you to the playoffs with a stellar last 5 weeks.

He's not all about the money.

Loyalty, and Comfort factor in as discussed earlier today on here. We won't necessarily have to outbid anyone.

Pavano will be back so its a moot point

I'm not a believer in the "comfort and loyalty" factors, but at the same time, the Florida State Tax laws give you a MAJOR advantage in the negotiations....I will give you that.....

these 'now or later' questions always get me but since i'm not a very patient person, i'd rather see them in the playoffs now

Definitely playoffs now. A lot of young pitching down in the farm, although not ready could sign someone to a one year deal until one of them actually is ready

But hey never know Pavs might be true to his word and be loyal to Loria who has treated him well over the years

I don't see where the two are related.

Pavano has shown an interest in continuing with the Marlins, so as long as we can give him a competitive offer, he'll be back....regardless of whether we go to the playoffs.

Agreed... unless we fancy re-signing LoDuca and Benitez which would be a huge mistake.

A great starter is worth is weight in gold and we are lacking solid SP prospects in the high minors (Wayne, Bump? maybe, Hutchinson? no) to remain a competitive 80+ win team.
