September 5, 200422 yr Kurkjian (screw the spelling): "The Marlins need Mike Lowell, and remember they need a stadium deal in place by November 1st to keep him, which at this point a deal won't happen." Well obviously they must have been living in a cave for the last 4 months. :plain
September 5, 200422 yr A deal won't happen by Nov 1 which is what he meant. Mike will be here next year no worries
September 5, 200422 yr I doubt Mikey wont be here next year. And its obvious there wont be a stadium by Nov.

But if you are being serious, than you are the misinformed on my friend. There is about 0% chance there will be a deal in pace by November, since the state won't be able to okay the $30 million by then, unless they call for a special session, which I don't think will happen. However, I think Mike will opt to excercise his player option and stay the year. He just wanted to be able to escape if the team was run into the ground a-la 1997, which is not the case. He lives here, people love him here, and its not like he isn't making a lot of money if he stays next year anyway.

September 5, 200422 yr Well then they just want to rub in the fact that the Saux, or Yanks or whatever other team could potentially make a run at Lowell in the off-season, which is big news. He would be one of the bigger offensive players in free agency in the offseason.

September 5, 200422 yr There are a lot of infielders on the market this winter, lessening the chance Lowell could get top dollar for his services.

September 5, 200422 yr The Marlins didn't trade Pudge, they didn't match his salary demands. They didn't want to overpay a catcher when he was 33, 34 or 35 with a bad back and bad knees. Lowell will stay. He won't get much more than $8M a year, and the stadium deal will happen (just not before November).

September 6, 200422 yr Check the list of infielders avalable this winter: Jeff Kent, Adrian Beltre, Nomar Garciaparra, Edgar Renteria, Troy Glaus, Placido Polanco, Alex Gonzalez (CHC), Orlando Cabrera, Corey Koskie, Todd Walker, Mark Grudzielanek.. If Lowell opts not to come back he'll be hard pressed to get the $8MM million he's gauranteed next year. Also it limits the value Luis Castillo might have in a trade (which had been recently discussed here.)
