September 22, 200422 yr vs the Giants(I think) do to the observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest day for Jews
September 22, 200422 yr They were talking about this on the DP Show.. They brought up the question, what if NBA Players said they refused to play on Christmas?
September 22, 200422 yr He has done this throughout his career. In Toronto he used to play 161 games a year, but could never get a strek going because of this situation.
September 22, 200422 yr Who cares? Basketball players play on Christmas. Baseball is going on during Easter. Just because he's a pretty good player and he's Jewish doesn't mean he's some amazing person for taking a day off work for a religious observance.
September 22, 200422 yr It's pretty debatable that Yom Kippur is a holier day to Jews than Easter or Christmas is to non-Jews. The fact he's playing on Friday night though during it makes me wonder why he even bothers missing Saturday's. Already playing during the holiday anyway.

Yom Kippur is especially important for reformed Jews that are not religious at all and rarely or never observe other Jewish holidays. It is the day of atonement for Jews which basically means you're supposed to make amends for all of your sins over the past year, which is what makes this holiday especially important for Jews that do not observe many holidays, if any. On Yom Kippur you are not allowed to go to work under any circumstance and you're also supposed to fast. Yom Kippur is far more meaningful and important to Jews than Christmas and Easter are to Christians, but without all the flash and commercialization that have taken over many Christian holidays.

The game starts at 7:15 PM and is an away game so the Dodgers would be able to bat first so Shawn Green would probably be able to get in 1 AB before nightfall due to daylight savings time. Sandy Koufax was slated to pitch in game 1 of the 1965 World Series but sat out because that game fell on Yom Kippur, instead Don Drysdale pitched and allowed something like 7 runs in 2 innings and the Dodgers ended up losing the game which they otherwise would have been almost guaranteed to win had Koufax pitched. But it was all good since Sandy Koufax pitched two CGS' later in the series, one of them in game 7.

Sounds a lot like Easter or Christmas to me. That's the only time a significant amount of "Christians" attend church services.

September 23, 200422 yr I can't knock him but if it were my case, I have to acknowledge the committment I made to my teammates and organization. Christians have played on their holiest days as it's their choice to play, just as it's Green's choice to sit out. I still have to go with you made a committment and I hardly think breaking a holiday to fufill your worldy obligations would be grounds for relegious blasphemy.
September 23, 200422 yr Shawn is pretty good, but it's not like the Dodgers are hopeless in his absence :confused
