November 3, 200422 yr Author MLB All-Stars arrive in Japan Coping with jet lag, preparing for Friday opener By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com Cardinals pitcher Jason Marquis signs autographs as MLB All-Stars arrive at Tokyo's Narita Airport. (Katsumi Kasahara/AP) TOKYO -- Major League Baseball's All-Star team arrived in the Land of the Rising Sun after a 12-hour flight from Los Angeles, trying to cope with severe jet lag and a grueling schedule. The trip began on Tuesday morning and after crossing the International Dateline, Tuesday miraculously turned into Wednesday afternoon. "I'm dragging," manager Bruce Bochy said on Wednesday night. "They told me not to go to sleep too early. I hung in there, grabbed dinner and now I'm fading." The MLB All-Stars open an eight-game, five-city tour against their counterparts from Nippon Professional Baseball on Friday night in the Tokyo Dome. Both teams work out at the Dome on Thursday afternoon. [More in URL]
November 5, 200422 yr Author MLB rallies, takes Game 1 Roger Clemens tosses his first pitch of the game on Friday night at the Tokyo Dome. (Koichi Kamoshida/Getty Images) TOKYO -- Roger Clemens unintentionally missed the team photo before Friday night's opener of Major League Baseball's All-Star tour of Japan at the Tokyo Dome. He entered the ballpark about an hour before the start of the game and pitched into the fifth inning. It wasn't vintage Clemens against the Japanese All-Stars, but he allowed just two runs as his teammates took care of the rest. The All-Stars scored three times in the sixth and four times in the seventh for a 7-2 victory over their Japanese counterparts in Game 1 of the eight-game, five city tour. Clemens, who has been bogged down with off-field obligations since he arrived in Japan on Wednesday night, walked five, struck out four and allowed two runs -- on earned -- on four hits. He walked three during the fifth inning and left with two out and the Japanese leading, 2-0. He threw 81 pitches, but never seemed comfortable after setting down the side in order to open the game "We've had full days since I've been here," said Clemens, the Astros right-hander, who visited a school in the morning followed by a trip to the U.S. Embassy for a lunch and presentation with Ambassador Howard Baker. "Just about every day I'll be here is going to be pretty full." Ortiz, who helped lead the Boston Red Sox to their first World Series title since 1918, drove in a pair of runs Friday at the Tokyo Dome to lead a team of major league stars to a 7-2 victory over Japanese counterparts in the opener of an eight-game exhibition series. Kiko Calero of the St. Louis Cardinals got the win for the major league stars, working just one-third of an inning in relief of starter Roger Clemens. San Diego Padres closer Akinori Otsuka pitched a perfect ninth to wrap things up for the visitors in his return to Japan. Toronto's Vernon Wells also had a pair of RBIs, while Moises Alou of the Chicago Cubs and Texas' Hank Blalock both went 3-for-5. Clemens went 4 2-3 innings in his first action since taking the loss in Game 7 of the NLCS, when his Houston Astros lost 5-2 to the Cardinals. The Rocket looked rusty at times Friday, struggling with his control and walking four. He allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out four. [More in URL]

November 6, 200421 yr Author MLB makes it two straight in Japan Red Sox slugger David Ortiz watches the flight of his titanic tater in the fourth inning. (Koji Sasahara/AP) TOKYO -- It was Carl Crawford's world on Saturday night in Game 2 of the 2004 Japan All-Star Series and for a moment he even let David Ortiz enter into it. Crawford, the Tampa Bay left fielder, had a homer, two singles, stole a base and made a flat-out belly flop of a diving catch to open the fourth inning, robbing Japan's Kazuya Fukuura of a sure extra-base hit. But Ortiz, continuing a postseason of amazing performances, may have done Crawford one better. The Boston Red Sox star drilled a lead off homer in the bottom of the fourth about as far one can hit a ball in the Tokyo Dome. It caromed off a strip of lights that separates a cinder block wall from the Teflon roof high above the right field bleachers. Estimated distance: 514 feet. "I thought for a second it would land in the Dominican," said Ortiz, after MLB defeated Japan, 5-3, to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Minnesota's Kyle Lohse started for MLB and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three, walked none and hit a batter. Atlanta's Chris Reitsma worked the eighth inning and was credited with the win, while the Angels' Francisco Rodriguez retired the side without incident in the ninth to record the save. [More in URL]
