November 2, 200422 yr I don't think it has been posted yet. Sosa/Pedro Don't be surprised if the Marlins make a play for Cubs right fielder Sammy Sosa, who owns a home in South Florida. The Cubs would need to pay the bulk of the $43 million that Sosa would earn through 2006 if he were dealt; they could start by taking back Marlins right fielder Juan Encarnacion and his $4.45 million salary for '05. The Marlins, though, can offer prospects in exchange for cash. Adding a slugging outfielder would enable them to move right fielder Miguel Cabrera to third and third baseman Mike Lowell to first. ... Red Sox free-agent righthander Pedro Martinez also might be intriguing for the Marlins and other NL teams in warm-weather cities. Facing less taxing NL lineups would help Martinez lower his pitch counts, and pitching in warm weather helps him loosen up quicker. Of course, the Marlins could only afford Martinez if they had the assurance of a new ballpark. The Padres would need to trade left fielder Ryan Klesko or first baseman Phil Nevin. The Dodgers might make the most sense ? if they're willing to meet Martinez's price. ... I still think we could get Sosa to waive the automatic option for next year and maybe sign a long term extension at a discount. He'd be a God in South Florida and I think he'd rather have that feeling than the highest dollar he could get. No way we can afford Pedro.
November 2, 200422 yr hmmm the Marlins possibly making a run at Sammy? who came up with that gem? and for Encarnacion as starters? shocking!

I for one was all for it, especially now if it looks like Enc will leave while Sammy comes in. If the Fish could land Sammy that will solve the offense immediately. Hopefully, Loria is as committed as it sounds he is if we secure the stadium. If so this team has a bright future.
November 2, 200422 yr Don't you guys look at the source before you jump to conclusions? It's Ken Rosenthal, MIKE BERARDINO'S BEST BUDDY, a guy who hates the Marlins almost as much as Mikey! This is pure unadulterated BS. Over and over Berardino and Rosenthal run a game on Marlins fans by setting up superstar trades so that they can then can later say management was too inept to make it happen. There's a pattern here.
November 2, 200422 yr Sosa is 36 and just came of his worst year in a while (he did hit 35 homers however), but in theory if they did go after him how many prospects would they have to give up?
November 2, 200422 yr I want Sammy!!!!! But I don't think we can get both of them unless something moves out. :confused :confused

November 2, 200422 yr Sammy would draw more people to the games........... 606460[/snapback] So would the Florida Marlins Mermaids in g-strings.

Just because a guy doesn't kiss the Marlins' ass doesn't mean he hates us. I'll never understand why so many people on this site thinks everyone at ESPN and any national publication hates the Marlins. :shifty As for what he reports, he's just filling a column with rumors he hears. Every national reporter does this. They need to fill up a column and keep fans interested in their work. Most of what they hear probably won't happen, but national reporters don't do it to set up a team to look bad. Most people probably claimed guys like Rosenthal and Gammons were setting up the Marlins by reporting they were trying to sign Pudge or Clemens. Guess what, they did actually sign Pudge. And I wouldn't be shocked if the Marlins did make a deal for Sosa.

He said on several occassions that Loria was the worst owner in baseball and that the Marlins didn't "deserve" to have a Mike Lowell. The list of Rosenthal comments regarding this franchise and its ownership have been virtually all negative and vitriolic. As for the association with Berardino it was the latter who told they were close friends.
November 2, 200422 yr Encarnacion doesn't seem like a good fit for the Cubs. Sure he rarely gets on base and complains about his playing time, but he's 29 and plays good defense. Maybe in 6 years...

Why do those obvious rips matter? They do that to ALL teams. They especially do it to regions with s***ty fans. Quite frankly, if we're judging by the average fan (not the die hards), than the Marlins and Braves deserve to finish at the bottom of their division every year. Writers rip the Marlins because the sports fans in South Florida suck. There is a battle every year between Miami fans and Atlanta fans for the "worst sports fans in America" contest. The national sports writers rip the Heat fans as well for the same reason.
November 3, 200422 yr Sosa's over the hill. Getting him won't solve anything. As for Pedro... well, I do think the young pitchers would benefit from some veteran leadership, but he's probably too expensive and not as much bang for your buck anymore with him. Kind of an intriguing possibility, but I can't say I'm for it.

However, the off-field effects it could have could be staggering. I mean, we'd sell enough Sosa jersies and get enough national attention and local ticket sales to justify the price we'd pay him...same could be save for Pedro, but a position player is more marketeable than a pitcher just because Sosa'd be on the field everyday, Pedro, once every five.

Sure he's aging, but even if he goes on the DL he's almost a guaranteed 35 homers a season, a huge crowd sell and when healthy one of the best power hitters in the game. The article said that if we got him it'd be at a very cheap price...why not? I think it'd be a great move from various angles.
