November 4, 200421 yr GAINESVILLE -- Steve Spurrier won't be returning to coach the Florida Gators. Spurrier removed his name from consideration Thursday to replace Ron Zook, who was fired last week after the latest in a series of embarrassing losses. Zook was hired at Florida after the 2001 season, when Spurrier left the Gators to coach the Washington Redskins. ``When I departed three years ago, there were several reasons why I believed it was time to move on,'' Spurrier said in a statement. ``Other than simply wanting to coach in the NFL someday, I also believed that 12 years at Florida was probably long enough. Many people in football believe that around 10-12 years in the same job is about the maximum time a coach should stay.'' The Gators won six Southeastern Conference championships and the 1996 national title under Spurrier. He posted 122 victories over 12 seasons, tormented opponents with his offensive flair and witty one-liners, and left town with the best winning percentage in league history. Spurrier said athletic director Jeremy Foley called him several times this week to set up a meeting after the season with him and school president Bernie Machen. ``They were obviously making an effort to meet with me,'' Spurrier said. Spurrier was fired by the Redskins after last season.

November 5, 200421 yr It's farfetched and I don't think it will happen, but there are two exit clauses in Stoops contract: Kansas State and Florida. Stoops has said that he wants to coach again in Florida, he just didn't want to follow Spurrier. Again, I don't think it will happen, in fact I think it is a one in a million chance. Urban Meyer my friend has won everywhere he has been. He's turned two teams into top 20 teams that had never broken the top 25. The guys offenses always lead the conference statistically and he is a huge disciplinarian. Very attractive candidate. Oh, and Utah is favored by 26 1/2 points over Colorado St this weekend. The Gators would be favored by maybe 1 versus CSU. And we have a ton of a lot more talent. Urban Meyer is a great coach. Get your head out of the clouds, it's tough to get an NFL coach, because, well, they're in the NFL. Stoops has a dream job in Oklahoma. A smaller college like Utah and West Virginia is where UF is going to have to go to get the next coach.

That is 2 times zones away from teams like UT, but lightyears in terms of emotion and talent. They should go after the former Gator Mike Mularkey or Butch Davis, two guys who can coach and know about football down here. Both of those are far more proven than Meyer and his one hit wonder AT UTAH.

Utah is top 10. What can you say bad about Utah right now man? Get real.
November 6, 200421 yr Utah hasn't proven anything until they beat a good team. Boise St is doing great, but when you play in a crappy conference, winning isn't hard. Meyer's few seasons at head coach don't make him a consistent winner, and if he comes and gets killed by the Vols in his first home game you'll have half of the fans wanting his head. This has to be a move with no risk associated to it because they already screwed up once and there is no margin for error.
November 6, 200421 yr If the fans want his head after one loss to Tennessee, then I'm pretty darn ashamed of Gator fans. 4-4. We're 4-4. I doubt any loss with the new coach next year would bring too much tension in the program.
